The Dharan to Dhankuta Drive
A scenic ridge road from Dharan up past Bhedetar to Dhankuta, through orange groves and tea country.
The drive from Dharan to Dhankuta is one of eastern Nepal's most rewarding short road trips — a steady climb out of the hot Terai onto cool, tea-growing ridges, with the famous Bhedetar viewpoint as its midpoint. In two to two and a half hours you trade the bustle of the plains city for the calm of a clean, breezy hill town.
The short answer
Head north out of Dharan and let the road switchback uphill. The first big stop is the Bhedetar viewpoint, about 15 kilometres up, where the plains and hills open out below and the temperature drops noticeably. From there the road runs along ridges through forest, orange groves and tea slopes to Dhankuta, the cool district headquarters about 45 kilometres from Dharan. It is an easy half- to full-day outing, and the natural first leg of the longer Dharan to Hile and Basantapur run.
The drive
The road is the experience. Leaving Dharan, you climb fast through forested bends, feeling the heat fall away with every turn. After Bhedetar, the route settles into rolling ridge country — terraced fields, scattered villages, and the orange and tea cultivation the region is known for. There are tea stalls and small eateries along the way where you can stop for a glass of milky chiya and a plate of momos while taking in the view. In clear winter weather, the high peaks of the eastern Himalaya sometimes show on the northern horizon.
Dhankuta
Dhankuta is one of Nepal's tidiest hill towns, an old administrative centre with a relaxed, cool-climate feel. Its bazaar is clean and walkable, the surrounding slopes grow oranges and tea, and the town makes a comfortable, low-key place to overnight before pushing deeper into the hills. It is also a cultural crossroads of Limbu, Rai and other eastern hill communities. From Dhankuta the road continues to Hile and the trailhead town of Basantapur, the start of routes towards the high Kanchenjunga and Makalu country.
