Things to do in Syabrubesi
A riverside bazaar town in Rasuwa at the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola, Syabrubesi is the road-end trailhead for the Langtang Valley and Tamang Heritage treks, close to the Tibet border.
Syabrubesi is the riverside gateway to the Langtang region — a busy little bazaar town in Rasuwa at the meeting of the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola, about 1,460m above sea level and some 120km north of Kathmandu. It is the road-end trailhead where almost every Langtang trek begins, and the last place to buy supplies before the mountains. Close to the Tibet border at Rasuwagadhi, it has the feel of a frontier town: jeeps loading for the hills, porters sorting loads and the constant rush of glacial water below.
Most visitors spend a night here before walking. Start with our roundup of the top things to do in Syabrubesi, then explore the strip of teahouses and shops in Syabrubesi bazaar and the rivers at the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola confluence. The main event is the start of the Langtang Valley trek, which climbs east into Langtang National Park. For culture instead of high peaks, take the Tamang Heritage Trail from Syabrubesi, with its stone villages and the Tatopani hot springs. Northwest, the road runs to the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border with Tibet, while a southern route links the town toward Gosaikunda.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Syabrubesi?+
Syabrubesi is a riverside bazaar town in Rasuwa district, in Bagmati Province, about 1,460m above sea level at the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Langtang Khola. It sits roughly 120km north of Kathmandu and is the last sizeable settlement and roadhead before the Langtang treks begin, close to the Tibet border.
Why do travellers come to Syabrubesi?+
Almost everyone passes through Syabrubesi because it is the trailhead for two of Nepal's best Langtang-region walks — the Langtang Valley trek and the Tamang Heritage Trail. Most trekkers arrive by road from Kathmandu, spend a night here, then set off on foot into Langtang National Park the next morning.
How do you get to Syabrubesi?+
By road only — there is no airport. It is a long but scenic 6 to 8 hour drive of about 120km from Kathmandu via Trishuli Bazaar and Dhunche, on public buses or a hired jeep. The mountain road is winding and can be slow in the monsoon, so leave early.
Is Syabrubesi worth staying overnight?+
Yes, and usually you have to: most trekkers arrive in the afternoon and start walking the next day. The town has a strip of teahouses and lodges along the river, basic shops to top up supplies and the Langtang National Park checkpoint where permits are inspected before you head up.
