Mountain village and snow peaks in the Langtang region of Nepal

Langtang & Helambu

The closest Himalaya to Kathmandu — Langtang's glacier valley, the holy lakes of Gosaikunda and the gentle hills of Helambu, with everything to plan a trip in one place.

The Langtang region is the Himalaya you can reach in a day from Kathmandu — no flights, just a drive north to where glacier valleys, sacred lakes and old Hyolmo villages climb toward the Tibetan border. It rewards trekkers with big mountain scenery on shorter, quieter trails than the Everest or Annapurna circuits, and rebuilt villages that have become a model of resilience after the 2015 earthquake.

How to explore the region

Most journeys begin at Syabrubesi, the roadhead gateway for the Langtang Valley trek up to Kyanjin Gompa. From there the high route climbs to Gosaikunda, a chain of sacred alpine lakes that draws both pilgrims and trekkers, and the Laurebina La pass drops south into Helambu, a gentle land of terraced ridges and Hyolmo culture within easy reach of Kathmandu. Pick a destination below to dig into its trails, teahouses and high points.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Langtang region known for?+

Langtang is the Himalayan range closest to Kathmandu, reachable in a single day's drive. It is famous for the glacier-fed Langtang Valley beneath Langtang Lirung, the sacred high-altitude lakes of Gosaikunda, and the Hyolmo (Sherpa) villages of Helambu. Together they offer some of Nepal's most accessible teahouse trekking through rhododendron forest, yak pastures and alpine meadows.

How many days do you need to trek in Langtang?+

The classic Langtang Valley trek from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa and back takes about seven to ten days. Adding the Gosaikunda lakes or crossing into Helambu via the Laurebina La pass turns it into a two-week loop. Helambu on its own is a gentler four-to-six-day option that starts and ends closer to Kathmandu.

How do you get to the Langtang region from Kathmandu?+

Most treks start at Syabrubesi, a roadhead about seven to nine hours north of Kathmandu by bus or jeep along the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi valleys. Helambu treks often begin from Sundarijal or Melamchi on the valley's eastern edge, a much shorter drive. No flights are needed, which is part of why the region is so popular for shorter trips.

Do you need permits for trekking in Langtang?+

Yes. You need a Langtang National Park entry permit and a TIMS card, both arranged in Kathmandu or at park checkpoints. Solo trekking rules have tightened in recent years, so check current requirements and consider a licensed guide, especially for the higher Gosaikunda crossing.
