The Best Time to Visit Nepal

Autumn is peak and crystal-clear, spring is best for blooms, winter is quiet and the monsoon is cheap — here's how to choose.

Nepal is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons and with altitude. The same week can be sweltering in the Terai and freezing on a high pass. Here's how to time your trip to match what you want to do.

The short answer

The best time to visit Nepal is autumn (October to November), when skies are clearest, the high peaks are at their most dramatic and the biggest festivals fall. Spring (March to April) is a close second, ideal for trekking among blooming rhododendrons. Winter (December to February) is cold but dry, clear and quiet, while the monsoon (June to September) is wet and green but the cheapest and least crowded.

Season by season

SeasonMonthsWeatherBest for
Autumn (peak)Oct–NovClear, mild, sharp mountain viewsTrekking, sightseeing, festivals
SpringMar–AprWarm, hazier, rhododendrons in bloomTrekking, wildlife
WinterDec–FebCold nights, dry, very clearLow-altitude trekking, quiet temples
MonsoonJun–SepHot, wet, lush greenBudget trips, rain-shadow treks, Terai
  • Autumn is the classic window: dry, stable and perfect for both high treks and city tours, but everything fills up, so book ahead.
  • Spring brings warm days and the second trekking season, with hillsides of red and pink rhododendron, though afternoon haze can soften the views.
  • Winter offers empty trails at lower altitudes and superb visibility, provided you can handle cold nights and the odd closed high pass.
  • Monsoon is underrated for city breaks and the Terai, with the lowest prices of the year, but cloud usually hides the big peaks.

How the regions differ

Nepal's three geographic bands experience the seasons very differently:

  • Terai (lowlands): Hot and humid much of the year, with the most pleasant weather from November to February. Summers are scorching and the monsoon is heavy.
  • Hills (Kathmandu, Pokhara): Mild and temperate, with comfortable autumns and springs and crisp, cold winter nights.
  • Mountains: Cool to bitterly cold depending on altitude; high passes can be snowbound in winter and only fully reliable in the two trekking seasons.

Festivals worth timing your trip around

  • Dashain (late September/October) is Nepal's biggest festival, a fortnight of family gatherings, blessings and kite-flying.
  • Tihar (October/November), the festival of lights, follows soon after with homes lit by oil lamps and marigold garlands.
  • Holi (March) is the joyful festival of colours, when streets fill with coloured powder and water.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Nepal?+

October is the single best month. The monsoon has cleared, the air is crisp, mountain views are at their sharpest and temperatures are pleasant across most of the country. It also brings the Dashain and Tihar festivals, making it the busiest and priciest time, so book well ahead.

Can you visit Nepal during the monsoon?+

Yes, though it suits some trips better than others. June to September is warm, wet and green, with the lowest prices of the year and few crowds. City sightseeing and jungle safaris in the Terai still work well, but high peaks are often hidden by cloud and many trekking trails are muddy, leech-prone and prone to landslides.

How cold is Nepal in winter?+

It depends on altitude. The Terai stays mild, Kathmandu and Pokhara have crisp days around 12 to 19 degrees Celsius with near-freezing nights, and the high mountains are very cold with snow blocking some high passes. Winter is dry, clear and quiet, so it rewards travellers who pack warm layers.

When is the best time for trekking in Nepal?+

The two prime trekking seasons are autumn (October to November) and spring (March to April), both with stable weather and clear views. Autumn is the most popular and reliable; spring adds blooming rhododendron forests. Winter trekking works at lower altitudes, and the monsoon is best spent in rain-shadow regions like Mustang and Upper Dolpo.
