Tansen Travel Guide
A historic Newari hill bazaar town in Palpa, famed for its stepped lanes, old temples, dhaka weaving and the riverside Rani Mahal — the 'Taj Mahal of Nepal'.
Tansen is a historic Newari hill bazaar town and the headquarters of Palpa district, strung along a ridge in Nepal's western hills at around 1,350 metres. Once a powerful kingdom and a key trading post on the route between the Terai and Tibet, it kept its Newari character long after the trade faded — a town of stepped stone lanes, carved windows, tiled rooftops and the steady tap of metalworkers' hammers.
The heart of town is the Tansen Durbar and Sitalpati square, the old administrative palace beside an open octagonal pavilion where the bazaar still gathers. From here, narrow lanes climb to the hilltop Bhagwati Temple and drop to the serene, pagoda-roofed Amar Narayan Temple, one of the finest old temples in the western hills. Above the rooftops rises Srinagar Danda, the pine-covered viewpoint that catches sunrise over the Himalaya from Dhaulagiri across to the Annapurnas.
Tansen's most celebrated sight lies below the town, on the banks of the Kali Gandaki: the Rani Mahal palace, a riverside European-style mansion built by a grieving general for his late queen and known as the 'Taj Mahal of Nepal'. The town is also a craft centre, famous for handwoven dhaka cloth and karuwa metalwork, and a gateway to the old pilgrimage market of Ridi Bazaar at the river confluence.
Set on the Siddhartha Highway, Tansen makes an easy, atmospheric break between Lumbini and Pokhara, and earns its place among the best places to visit in Nepal. Is Tansen worth visiting?+
Yes — Tansen is one of Nepal's most atmospheric hill bazaars, a Newari town of stepped stone lanes, old temples and metalwork workshops. The riverside Rani Mahal palace and the sunrise views from Srinagar Danda make it a rewarding, low-key stop in the western hills.
Where is Tansen?+
Tansen is the headquarters of Palpa district in Lumbini Province, set on a ridge in Nepal's western hills at around 1,350 metres. It sits on the Siddhartha Highway between Butwal in the Terai and Pokhara, making it a natural break between Lumbini and the lakes.
What is Tansen famous for?+
Tansen is famous for its preserved Newari bazaar, the Tansen Durbar and Sitalpati square, old temples such as Bhagwati and Amar Narayan, and traditional crafts — handwoven dhaka cloth and karuwa metal water jugs. Its best-known sight is the riverside Rani Mahal palace, called the 'Taj Mahal of Nepal'.
How many days do you need in Tansen?+
One to two days suits most visitors. A full day covers the bazaar, the durbar square and the main temples, with a sunrise or sunset on Srinagar Danda. Add a second day for the half-day walk down to the Rani Mahal palace by the Kali Gandaki river.
How do you get to Tansen?+
Tansen lies on the Siddhartha Highway. Most travellers arrive by bus or private vehicle from Butwal (about an hour and a half uphill) or from Pokhara to the north. Butwal connects to Bhairahawa and Lumbini, so Tansen slots neatly into a Terai-to-hills route.
