How to Get to Tansen

How to reach Tansen on the Siddhartha Highway — bus or car from Butwal, Bhairahawa or Pokhara, with times and tips.

Tansen sits on the Siddhartha Highway, the road that links Pokhara in the hills with Butwal and the Terai. Most travellers arrive by bus or private vehicle, climbing up from Butwal to the south or down through the hills from Pokhara to the north. There is no commercial airport in town, so the journey is overland.

From Butwal, Bhairahawa and Lumbini

The most common approach is from the south. From Butwal, Tansen is about an hour and a half uphill on the Siddhartha Highway. Bhairahawa (with Gautam Buddha International Airport) and Lumbini connect to Butwal in roughly an hour, so the full trip from Lumbini takes around two and a half to three hours — making Tansen a natural first stop heading from the Terai into the hills.

From Pokhara

Coming from Pokhara, Tansen is roughly four to five hours along winding hill roads via the Siddhartha Highway. It's a scenic but slow drive; start early to arrive in daylight, and break the journey if you can.

Buses and private vehicles

Regular buses run along the Siddhartha Highway and stop at Tansen, and you can also hire a private car or jeep, which is faster and more flexible for the hill roads and for side trips down to the Rani Mahal or out to Ridi Bazaar. Roads can be slow and occasionally rough, especially in the monsoon.

Getting around once you arrive

Tansen's old town is compact and best explored on foot — the durbar square, temples and bazaar are all walkable, and the climb to Srinagar Danda starts right from town. For longer excursions, arrange a local jeep. Plan onward travel with our guide to getting around Nepal, and once you've arrived, sort a base with where to stay in Tansen.
