Nepal Travel Guide
From the snow-crowned giants of the Himalaya to steamy jungle in the Terai, Nepal packs a continent of landscapes, cultures and adventures into one small country.
Nepal is a small Himalayan country squeezed between India and Tibet, yet within a few hours' drive it climbs from steamy lowland jungle to eight of the world's fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres, including Mount Everest. Few places offer this much variety in such a compact space.
The country falls into three broad bands running east to west. In the south lies the Terai, a flat, fertile plain of farmland and national parks where you can spot rhinos and tigers in Chitwan and visit the birthplace of the Buddha at Lumbini. Through the middle run the green hills, home to the cultural heart of the country — the temple-filled Kathmandu Valley and the lakeside town of Pokhara. To the north rise the Himalaya, a wall of ice and rock that draws trekkers and mountaineers from around the world.
Most journeys begin in Kathmandu, the chaotic, captivating capital, before heading west to Pokhara, the laid-back gateway to the Annapurna range. Whether you come for high-altitude trekking, ancient temples, wildlife safaris or simply slow days with a Himalayan backdrop, Nepal rewards every kind of traveller.
Before you go, sort out the best time to visit Nepal for your plans and read up on the Nepal visa so you arrive without surprises.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to visit Nepal?+
Most nationalities need a tourist visa, which is available on arrival at Kathmandu airport and major land borders, or online in advance. Indian citizens do not need a visa. See our full guide to the Nepal visa for fees and durations.
When is the best time to visit Nepal?+
Autumn (October to November) is the peak season, with clear skies, sharp mountain views and the biggest festivals. Spring (March to April) is a close second for trekking. Winter is cold but clear, and the monsoon (June to September) is wet but green and cheap.
How many days do you need in Nepal?+
One week covers Kathmandu and Pokhara comfortably. Two weeks lets you add Chitwan's jungle and a short trek, while three weeks gives time for a longer trek such as the Annapurna or Everest regions, plus Lumbini.
Is Nepal safe for tourists?+
Yes, Nepal is generally a safe and welcoming destination, with violent crime against tourists being rare. The main risks are altitude sickness while trekking, road accidents on mountain highways and monsoon landslides, all of which are manageable with sensible planning.
How much does a trip to Nepal cost?+
Nepal is one of Asia's better-value destinations. Budget travellers can manage on around US$25 to US$35 a day, mid-range travellers on US$50 to US$90, while organised treks, guides and domestic flights push costs higher.
