Rani Mahal Palace
A riverside palace on the Kali Gandaki below Tansen, built for a late queen and called the 'Taj Mahal of Nepal'.
Rani Mahal is a riverside palace on the banks of the Kali Gandaki, set in the gorge below Tansen and known as the 'Taj Mahal of Nepal'. It was built in the 1890s by General Khadga Shumsher Rana in memory of his late queen, Tej Kumari — a romantic monument raised by a grieving husband, much like its Indian namesake.
What to expect
The European-style mansion stands alone on a bend of the river beneath steep, forested hills, a strikingly tranquil setting after the busy lanes of town. Long neglected, it has been partly restored, and visitors come as much for the dramatic riverside location and the story behind it as for the architecture. The walk down passes terraced hillsides and small villages before the palace appears beside the water.
Good to know
- Getting there: A downhill walk of roughly two to three hours from Tansen, or a jeep ride along a rough access road; the return climb is the hard part, so many do one leg on foot and one by vehicle.
- Timing: Start early and allow a half-day round trip; the riverside is hot at midday, so morning light and cooler air are best.
- Nearby: Combine the trip with the pilgrimage market at Ridi Bazaar at the river confluence. Back in town, the Tansen Durbar and bazaar are the natural base. See where it fits in the best things to do in Tansen and the wider best places to visit in Nepal.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Rani Mahal?+
Rani Mahal is a European-style riverside palace on the banks of the Kali Gandaki below Tansen. It was built in the 1890s by General Khadga Shumsher Rana in memory of his late queen, Tej Kumari, which has earned it the nickname the 'Taj Mahal of Nepal'.
Why is Rani Mahal called the Taj Mahal of Nepal?+
Like the Taj Mahal, it was raised by a grieving husband in memory of his wife. General Khadga Shumsher built the palace and gardens on the riverbank for his late queen, and its romantic story and dramatic riverside setting earned it the comparison.
How do you get to Rani Mahal from Tansen?+
It's a roughly two-to-three-hour downhill walk from Tansen to the river, with the climb back being harder. Many visitors arrange a jeep along the rough access road for one or both legs. Allow a half-day for the round trip and start early to avoid the midday heat.
Is it worth visiting Rani Mahal?+
Yes, especially for its setting and story. The palace stands alone on the bank of the Kali Gandaki below forested hills, a tranquil and photogenic spot. It has been partly restored after years of neglect, and the journey down through the hills is rewarding in itself.
