Start of the Langtang Valley Trek

The trailhead where the Langtang Valley trek climbs east along the Langtang Khola into the park.

The Langtang Valley trek begins at Syabrubesi, where the path crosses the river and climbs east along the Langtang Khola into Langtang National Park. From this riverside roadhead the route heads up through forest to Lama Hotel and on to Langtang village and Kyanjin Gompa, the high base at about 3,870m beneath Langtang Lirung. It is one of the most accessible high-mountain treks from Kathmandu, reached entirely by road.

The trailhead

From Syabrubesi bazaar you'll have your Langtang National Park permit and TIMS card checked at the checkpoint, then drop to the river and start climbing. The first day winds through dense oak and rhododendron forest above the Langtang Khola — keep an eye out for langur monkeys — before the valley opens out higher up. This lower section is shared briefly with walkers heading to other Langtang routes.

What lies ahead

Above the forest the trail passes the rebuilt Langtang village, lost in a landslide triggered by the 2015 earthquake and since carefully restored, and reaches the yak pastures and cheese factory at Kyanjin Gompa beneath the icefalls of Langtang Lirung (7,227m). From there, acclimatised trekkers climb the viewpoints of Kyanjin Ri (about 4,300m) and the higher Tserko Ri (around 4,985m) for sweeping glacier panoramas across the valley. Most itineraries spend an acclimatisation day here before descending the same way to Syabrubesi. See the full route in our Langtang Valley trek guide.

The lower forest section is rich in wildlife — Himalayan langur monkeys, red panda in the densest stands and a wealth of birds — and the gradient eases as the valley broadens above the treeline. Because the whole route is reached by road rather than a flight, it is a forgiving introduction to high-mountain trekking, with shorter logistics than the Everest or Annapurna regions.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Langtang Valley trek start?+

It starts at Syabrubesi, the riverside roadhead in Rasuwa. From the bazaar the trail crosses the river and climbs east along the Langtang Khola through forest to Lama Hotel, then up the valley via Langtang village to Kyanjin Gompa, the usual high base at about 3,870m.

How long is the Langtang Valley trek from Syabrubesi?+

Most people take about 7 to 8 days return from Syabrubesi, walking up to Kyanjin Gompa over three to four days, exploring and acclimatising for a day, then descending. Add a day either side for the road journey to and from Kathmandu.

How hard is the Langtang Valley trek?+

It is a moderate trek. The trails are non-technical, but there is sustained climbing and the high points around Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri reach roughly 4,300 to 5,000m, so altitude is a real factor. A reasonable level of fitness and a measured ascent matter.

What permits do you need to start the trek?+

You need a Langtang National Park entry permit and a TIMS card, both arranged in Kathmandu, and they are checked at the Syabrubesi park checkpoint. A licensed guide is required for the Langtang Valley route.
