How to Get to Syabrubesi

The 120km drive from Kathmandu via Trishuli Bazaar and Dhunche, by bus or jeep, to the Langtang roadhead.

To get to Syabrubesi, travel about 120km north of Kathmandu by road — there is no airport. The journey takes 6 to 8 hours via Trishuli Bazaar, Dhunche and the Langtang National Park road, by public bus or, more comfortably, by shared or private jeep. The route is paved at first and rougher higher up, so leave early and plan to arrive in daylight.

The short answer

From Kathmandu, drive north on the Pasang Lhamu Highway via Trishuli Bazaar (Bidur) and the Rasuwa district headquarters at Dhunche, where the Langtang National Park permit is checked, then descend the final stretch to Syabrubesi on the river. A private jeep is the easiest option; direct buses run the same route more cheaply but slowly. See the detailed route in Kathmandu to Syabrubesi.

By jeep or private vehicle

A shared or private jeep is the most popular way for trekkers. Shared jeeps leave when full and split the cost; a private jeep gives you flexibility to stop at viewpoints, break the journey in Dhunche or detour toward the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border. Expect 6 to 8 hours on a winding mountain road.

By public bus

Direct buses to Syabrubesi depart Kathmandu in the morning, usually from the Machhapokhari / New Bus Park area. They are the budget choice — cheap but crowded and slow, with frequent stops. For the wider picture on routes and timings, see our national guide to getting around Nepal.

Good to know

  • Road conditions: The section beyond Dhunche is rough and can be slow or briefly blocked after heavy rain; avoid travelling in the worst of the monsoon.
  • Permits: Have your Langtang National Park permit ready — it is checked at Dhunche en route.
  • Combine it: The same road passes Nuwakot and the Trishuli valley, an easy first stop on the way north.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Syabrubesi from Kathmandu?+

By road only — there is no airport. Syabrubesi lies about 120km north of Kathmandu, reached in 6 to 8 hours via Trishuli Bazaar, Dhunche and the Langtang National Park road. You can take a public bus, a shared jeep, or hire a private jeep or vehicle for more comfort and flexibility.

How long does the drive to Syabrubesi take?+

Allow 6 to 8 hours, sometimes longer. The first stretch on the Pasang Lhamu Highway is paved, but the mountain road beyond Dhunche is winding and can be rough, especially in and after the monsoon. Leave Kathmandu early to arrive in daylight and avoid night driving.

Is there a bus to Syabrubesi?+

Yes. Direct buses to Syabrubesi leave Kathmandu in the morning, typically from the Machhapokhari / New Bus Park area. They are cheap but slow and crowded. Many trekkers prefer a shared or private jeep, which is faster, more comfortable and easier to combine with sightseeing stops.

Can you fly to Syabrubesi?+

No. Unlike the Everest or Annapurna regions, the Langtang region has no airstrip near the trailhead, which is part of its appeal — it is reached entirely overland. The road journey from Kathmandu via Dhunche is the only way to reach Syabrubesi.
