Antu Danda Sunrise Viewpoint

Ilam's classic sunrise ridge above Shree Antu, with dawn over the eastern Himalaya and the plains below.

Antu Danda, the ridge above the village of Shree Antu, is Ilam's classic sunrise viewpoint. On a clear morning it delivers dawn over the eastern Himalaya, with layered tea-garden ridges in the foreground and the plains rolling away toward India and the lights of Darjeeling. It is the outing most visitors build a night around, staying in Shree Antu and walking up before first light.

What to expect

Shree Antu is a small hill settlement near the India border, dotted with homestays and simple guesthouses. A short uphill path leads to the Antu Danda viewpoint, where a tower and open ridge give a 360-degree sweep. As the sun comes up, the tea hills glow green and gold and — on the clearest mornings — the snow peaks of the Kanchenjunga region show on the northern horizon. Even when the high Himalaya hide, the layered ridges and the plains below make the climb worthwhile.

Looking south, the view drops away to the lowlands of Jhapa and into India, and on a clear night you can see the scattered lights of the plains and the hill town of Darjeeling across the border. Turn north and the land rises in wave after wave of forested ridge toward the snow line. It is this sweep — from subtropical plains to high Himalaya in a single panorama — that makes Antu Danda special.

Antu Danda has become Ilam's signature sunrise because it offers a genuine Himalayan view with very little effort. Unlike the high Sandakpur ridge, which needs a trek or a rough jeep ride, Shree Antu is reachable by road and the final walk to the tower is short and gentle. That accessibility makes it ideal for families, older travellers and anyone short on time, and it has spurred a small cluster of welcoming village homestays.

Good to know

  • Stay overnight: Sleeping in Shree Antu lets you reach the viewpoint before dawn without a long early drive.
  • Timing: Clear skies are most reliable from October to December and February to April; mornings beat afternoons for haze.
  • Layers: The ridge is cool and breezy before sunrise even in warmer months, so pack a warm top.
  • Allow a buffer: A cloudy dawn happens even in the dry season, so plan a spare morning if the mountains are your main goal.

Combine it with

Pair Antu Danda with the Kanyam and Fikkal tea gardens on the same route, or push higher to the Sandakpur ridge for the full Kanchenjunga panorama. Compare your options in Ilam's sunrise viewpoints and the best things to do in Ilam, and see Nepal's wider list of best sunrise spots.
