Begnas Lake

A quiet, less-developed lake near Pokhara in a green farming valley — boating, swimming and peaceful walks.

Begnas Lake is the quiet alternative to Pokhara's busy Phewa Lake — a calm, less-developed lake set in a green farming valley just east of the city. It is the place to go for boating, a swim and a peaceful afternoon away from the lakeside crowds.

Overview

Begnas is the second-largest lake in the Pokhara valley, ringed by terraced fields, citrus orchards and forested ridges rather than hotels. A low hill known as Panchabhaiya separates it from the smaller Rupa Lake nearby, and the two are sometimes visited together. With far fewer visitors than Phewa, Begnas has a slow, rural feel: fishing boats drift across the water, farmers work the surrounding slopes, and the loudest sound is often birdsong. Its relatively clean, warm water makes it a favourite for swimming and unhurried rowboat trips, and on clear days the Annapurna foothills rise beyond the far shore.

How to get there and visit

The lake sits about 15 km east of central Pokhara, a 30- to 40-minute drive by taxi or local bus along the Prithvi Highway and a turn-off toward the lakeshore. The road ends close to the water, where a cluster of simple restaurants and boatmen wait. There is no formal entry fee; you pay only for a boat or a meal. Mornings are calmest and best for reflections, while clear autumn and spring days bring out the distant mountains. Because there is little development, bring what you need for the day, and allow time simply to sit and enjoy the quiet. Many people come as a half-day or full-day escape from the busier Lakeside scene, sometimes combining it with a short stay at one of the small guesthouses on the ridge.

Things to do

  • Boating — hire a wooden rowboat and drift across the quiet water; some boatmen will row you to the far shore.
  • Swimming — the relatively clean, warm water makes Begnas one of the nicest lakes in Nepal for a dip.
  • Walk to Rupa Lake — follow the ridge trail over the hill that divides the two lakes for valley views.
  • Lakeside dining — fresh fish and a relaxed meal with a view of the farming valley.

For the livelier sibling lake with an island temple, see Phewa Lake, which sits on the western side of the same city.

Begnas also makes a good base for gentle exploration of the eastern Pokhara valley. The terraced hills above the lake are laced with farm paths and small villages, and a short climb up the dividing ridge opens views over both Begnas and Rupa lakes at once. Birdwatchers do well here, with kingfishers, egrets and migratory waterfowl drawn to the quiet shallows, and the surrounding orchards and paddy fields give the whole area a green, lived-in landscape quite different from the resort strip of Lakeside.
