Do You Need a Guide to Trek in Nepal?

The post-2023 licensed-guide rules — which trails require one, the exceptions, and why it's now the norm.

Do you need a guide to trek in Nepal? For most travellers in 2026, yes. Since April 2023 the Nepal Tourism Board has required foreign trekkers to hire a licensed guide in national parks and conservation areas, ending independent solo trekking on the popular trails. Restricted regions always required one, so a guide is now standard.

The short answer

If your trek goes into a national park or conservation area — which covers Annapurna, Everest, Langtang and almost every classic route — you must trek with a licensed guide. Restricted regions like Manaslu and Upper Mustang go further, requiring a guide, a registered agency and a minimum of two trekkers. A handful of lower trails outside these systems still allow independent walking. Budget for a guide from the start — see the Nepal trekking cost breakdown.

What changed in 2023

The rule was introduced mainly for safety, after solo trekkers went missing or died on remote trails, and to support local employment. A licensed guide improves rescue response, navigation and altitude management, and directs income to Nepali workers and agencies.

Where a guide is required

  • National parks and conservation areas: Annapurna (ACAP), Everest (Sagarmatha), Langtang and others now require a licensed guide for foreigners.
  • Restricted regions: Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Dolpo and similar require a guide plus a registered agency and at least two trekkers.

The exceptions

Some lower trails and day hikes outside the national-park and conservation-area systems remain open to independent walkers — short routes in the hills around Kathmandu and Pokhara, for example. But for any of the high, classic treks, plan on a guide.

On most popular routes, yes. Since April 2023 the Nepal Tourism Board has required foreign trekkers to hire a licensed guide in national parks and conservation areas, ending solo trekking on those trails. Restricted regions like Manaslu and Upper Mustang have always required a guide and an agency, so a guide is now the norm rather than the exception.

Why did Nepal ban solo trekking?+

Treks inside national parks and conservation areas — Annapurna, Everest, Langtang and others — now require a licensed guide for foreigners, and restricted regions such as Manaslu, Upper Mustang and Dolpo require both a guide and a registered agency.
