Nepal in Winter
Cold nights, dry sunny days and empty trails — winter is Nepal's quiet, clear season, ideal for low treks, temples and Terai safaris.
Winter is Nepal's quiet season — cold and crisp, with some of the clearest skies of the year and far fewer travellers. While the highest trails sleep under snow, the lowlands and foothills are at their most comfortable, and the temples and cities are peaceful.
The short answer
Winter (December–February) is dry, clear and quiet. Days are sunny, nights are cold, and the high passes can be snowbound. It is ideal for low-altitude trekking, city sightseeing and Terai safaris, with the year's lowest crowds and prices — just pack warm layers.
The weather
| Region | Winter conditions |
|---|---|
| Terai | mild and pleasant, 10–25C; great for safari |
| Hills | sunny days, cold near-freezing nights |
| Himalaya | very cold, snow on high passes, clear views |
The big advantage is visibility and stability: clear, dry days are common, especially in December and early January, with sharp mountain views from the hills. The Kathmandu Valley can suffer cold morning fog and, in some years, the odd cold snap, but these usually burn off to leave bright afternoons. Snowfall is rare in the cities and lower hills but normal on the high ridges and passes, which adds to the scenery while closing the loftiest routes.
The flip side of the clear weather is genuinely cold nights. Many budget lodges in the hills and mountains are unheated, so a warm sleeping bag and good layers make all the difference. Days are also shorter, so plan to start treks and sightseeing early and wrap up before the late-afternoon chill sets in.
What to do in winter
- Trek low and clear. Poon Hill, lower Annapurna, the Langtang foothills and the Kathmandu Valley rim reward you with views and solitude.
- Go on safari. The mild Terai is one of the best winter choices, with comfortable days for wildlife in Chitwan.
- Explore the cities. Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur are quiet and atmospheric, with crisp, sunny days for temple-hopping.
- Chase mountain views. Hill viewpoints like Nagarkot and Sarangkot are superb in the clear winter air.
What to skip
Save the highest crossings for another season. Passes such as Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit and the high routes around Everest can be blocked by snow and bitter cold, so winter is not the time for the loftiest treks.
Where to go
Match your plans to altitude. The lowland Terai is the standout winter choice, mild and dry for wildlife in Chitwan and the far-western parks. The hill cities and viewpoints are clear and quiet, perfect for culture and photography. In the mountains, stick to lower routes and sunny valleys, and save the high passes for the trekking seasons. For options that still work in the cold, browse the best treks in Nepal and choose lower-altitude routes.
Festivals in winter
Winter brings Maghe Sankranti in mid-January, marking the sun's northward turn with ritual bathing and seasonal foods, and the Tibetan-Buddhist new year Losar in the mountain communities, usually in February. These quieter, more local celebrations suit the season's calmer mood, and you will often have temples and trails largely to yourself.
How winter compares
Winter is colder and quieter than crisp autumn and warm spring, but far clearer and drier than the cloudy monsoon. For the climate detail, see our Nepal weather and climate guide, and to weigh your dates read the best time to visit Nepal.
Frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Nepal in winter?+
Winter (December to February) is dry, sunny and clear by day but cold at night. The Terai stays mild, Kathmandu and Pokhara have crisp days around 12 to 19C with near-freezing mornings, and the high mountains are very cold, with snow blocking some high passes. Visibility is often excellent.
Can you trek in Nepal in winter?+
Yes, at lower altitudes. Routes like Poon Hill, the lower Annapurna and Langtang foothills, and the Kathmandu Valley rim are rewarding, with clear views and empty trails. Very high routes and passes such as Thorong La can be snowbound or closed, so winter is not the time for the highest crossings.
How cold does Nepal get in winter?+
It depends on altitude. The Terai is comfortably mild, the Kathmandu Valley drops near freezing on winter mornings, and high trekking areas and base camps fall well below zero. Daytime sun is often warm, but you need proper layers for cold nights anywhere above the lowlands.
Is winter a good time to visit Nepal?+
Winter is excellent for travellers who want clear skies, low prices and few crowds. It suits city sightseeing, lower-altitude treks and Terai wildlife safaris, where the weather is mild and pleasant. The main trade-offs are cold nights, shorter days and snow that closes some high mountain routes.
