Phulchowki Day Trip
Climb the highest hill on the Kathmandu Valley rim above Godawari — forest, birdlife and a Himalayan view in a day.
A Phulchowki day trip climbs the highest hill on the Kathmandu Valley rim — about 2,765 metres above the village of Godawari on the valley's southern edge — for forest, birdlife, rhododendrons and, on a clear day, a wide Himalayan horizon. Barely an hour from the city by road, it is the most rewarding view-and-nature outing you can do and return from in a single day, and it sits in our weekend getaways from Kathmandu collection as the valley's loftiest easy escape.
The climb
From near the Godawari Botanical Garden at the foot of the hill, a rough motorable road and a parallel walking trail both lead to the summit, passing through several habitat zones — scrub and degraded edge at the base, dense mossy broadleaf and oak-laurel forest higher up, and rhododendron near the top. Many visitors drive part of the way and walk the rest, or hike up and arrange a vehicle down. The wooded summit carries a small shrine and communication antennas, and on the clearest mornings the reward is a long view across the valley to the snow peaks.
Forest and birdlife
Phulchowki carries the best stretch of broadleaf forest near Kathmandu, and that range of habitats in a short vertical distance gives it a remarkable wildlife list. It is Nepal's most accessible top-quality birding hill, with well over 300 species recorded — laughingthrushes, minivets, sunbirds, warblers, woodpeckers and parrotbills among them, plus the endemic spiny babbler in the lower scrub. Even casual visitors notice the birdsong; for the full picture, see our dedicated guide to Phulchowki birding.
When to go
Spring (March to May) is the prime season, when the forest birds are vocal and the rhododendrons are in flower. Clear autumn and winter mornings give the sharpest mountain views, while the monsoon is wet, muddy and leech-ridden and best avoided. Whatever the season, start early — the summit clouds over by midday more often than not, and the early light is best for both views and birds.
Pairing it with the region
The natural pairing is the Godawari Botanical Garden at the base of the hill, an easy, planted half-day that combines perfectly with the climb — read more in our Godawari Botanical Garden guide. On the opposite rim, the Sundarijal gorge and Shivapuri forest make a similar forest-and-water outing. For more routes around the valley, see the best day hikes near Kathmandu.
Good to know
- Carry water, snacks and warm layers — the summit is cool even when the valley is warm.
- The road is rough; use a sturdy vehicle and avoid it after heavy rain.
- A local bird guide is well worth hiring if wildlife is your focus.
- Take all your litter back down; the summit and forest are otherwise easily spoiled.
