Pokhara to Jomsom: Bus, Jeep and Flight
A 20-minute STOL flight or a rough 8-9 hour jeep up the Kali Gandaki gorge — Pokhara to Jomsom by bus, jeep and air.
Reaching Jomsom from Pokhara means choosing between a thrilling 20-minute mountain flight, a long 8 to 9 hour jeep up the Kali Gandaki gorge, or a cheaper bus-and-jeep combination changing at Beni. Jomsom sits in lower Mustang, the dramatic high desert behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, and is the gateway to the sacred temple of Muktinath and apple-famous Marpha. This guide compares the three modes; for the onward leg to the temple, see our Pokhara to Jomsom & Muktinath guide. For your full routing, start with the intercity transport guide.

By bus
There's no single comfortable bus the whole way. Budget travellers take a local bus or shared jeep to Beni, where the sealed road ends, then change to a rugged jeep that grinds up the gorge to Jomsom. It's the cheapest route but also the most tiring, with dust, bumps and long hours, and you may need to overnight at Tatopani or Marpha if connections don't line up. Compare the bus classes in our tourist bus vs local bus guide.
By jeep
A 4WD jeep is the practical road choice for most visitors. Shared jeeps leave early and split the cost per seat; a private jeep lets you control the schedule and stop at viewpoints or in Marpha. The road is rough beyond Beni and a 2WD car can't manage it, so always book a proper jeep with an experienced mountain driver — see rates in our hiring a car with driver guide.
By air
The STOL flight is the highlight: small aircraft hop from Pokhara to Jomsom in about 20 minutes, threading between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Flights run only in the early morning before the valley winds rise, and weather cancellations are frequent — never schedule one on the day you must catch an international connection. Mind the tight domestic flight baggage allowance on these small planes.
Which option to choose
If time is short and the budget allows, fly and save a long day. If you want to see the gorge, save money, or the flights are grounded, take a jeep. Many pilgrims and trekkers fly one way and drive the other to enjoy both the views and the journey.
Tips
- Carry buffer days for flight cancellations and road closures.
- Arrange your ACAP permit (and TIMS if trekking) in Pokhara before you go.
- Mornings are clearer and less windy — start early whether flying or driving.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Pokhara to Jomsom?+
There are three main ways: a short STOL flight of about 20 minutes, a rough 8 to 9 hour jeep ride up the Kali Gandaki gorge, or a cheaper bus-and-jeep combination changing at Beni. The flight is fastest but weather-dependent, while the jeep is reliable but tiring.
How long is the jeep ride from Pokhara to Jomsom?+
Roughly 8 to 9 hours, longer in poor weather. The road is sealed only as far as Beni; beyond that it is a rough, dusty, unpaved mountain track following the Kali Gandaki gorge, so a 4WD jeep with an experienced driver is essential.
Is there a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom?+
Yes. Small STOL aircraft fly Pokhara to Jomsom in about 20 minutes, almost always early in the morning before mountain winds rise. Flights are highly weather-dependent and cancellations are common, so build in buffer days and never schedule a tight onward connection.
Can I take a bus all the way to Jomsom?+
Not comfortably. Most budget travellers take a local bus or shared jeep to Beni, then change to a rugged jeep for the rough upper road to Jomsom. It is the cheapest option but the slowest and most tiring, often needing an overnight at Tatopani or Marpha if connections do not line up.
