Rain-Shadow Treks for the Monsoon
Upper Mustang, Dolpo and Nar Phu lie behind the high peaks and stay dry — the monsoon trekking exception.
The monsoon (June to early September) soaks most of Nepal, but a handful of regions stay dry: the rain-shadow treks north of the main Himalaya. Here the high peaks block the monsoon clouds, leaving an arid, Tibetan-like landscape that remains walkable and largely clear all summer. Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Nar Phu and the upper Annapurna Circuit are the standout monsoon options. This page is part of our Nepal trekking seasons collection and pairs with our honest look at trekking in the monsoon season.
How the rain shadow works
The summer monsoon pushes moisture-laden clouds north from the Bay of Bengal. When they hit the towering wall of the Himalaya, they drop most of their rain on the southern slopes and rise over the peaks largely wrung dry. The valleys immediately north — behind Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and the main range — therefore receive very little rain, creating a high-desert climate that mirrors the Tibetan plateau.
The best rain-shadow treks
- Upper Mustang: the walled city of Lo Manthang, ochre canyons and ancient cave monasteries, sheltered behind Annapurna and Dhaulagiri and dry through the monsoon.
- Dolpo: the remote far west, including the turquoise Phoksundo Lake and Crystal Mountain; see the Upper Dolpo trek for the classic high route.
- Nar Phu valley: a hidden, restricted pair of valleys off the Annapurna region with Tibetan-influenced villages, covered in our Nar Phu valley trek guide.
- Upper Annapurna Circuit: the trail beyond Manang toward Muktinath and the Kali Gandaki stays much drier than the south — see the best time for the Annapurna Circuit.
What to expect
Expect bare, dramatic high-desert scenery, strong afternoon winds (especially in the Kali Gandaki and Mustang), and bright, clear skies for much of the day. Mornings are usually best for views before the wind builds. Even in the rain shadow, the occasional shower or a stray weather system can occur, so carry rain protection.
Permits and logistics
Most rain-shadow regions are restricted areas. Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo and Nar Phu all require a special restricted-area permit, a registered guide and usually a minimum group size, on top of the standard permits. Arrange these through a registered agency well ahead. Access often relies on small mountain flights to airstrips like Jomsom or Juphal, which can be weather-affected.
Planning a monsoon rain-shadow trek
These treks still reach significant altitude — read our altitude sickness in Nepal guide and plan permits, guides and pacing with the Nepal trekking guide. For the four-season overview, see the best time to trek in Nepal.
Frequently asked questions
What is a rain-shadow trek in Nepal?+
A rain-shadow trek follows valleys north of the main Himalaya, where the high peaks block the monsoon clouds and very little rain falls. Regions like Upper Mustang, Dolpo and Nar Phu have an arid, Tibetan-like climate, so they stay dry and walkable in the monsoon when southern Nepal is soaked.
Which treks are best during the monsoon in Nepal?+
The best monsoon treks are the rain-shadow routes: Upper Mustang, Lower and Upper Dolpo, Nar Phu valley and the upper, drier sections of the Annapurna Circuit beyond Manang. These stay largely dry, offer clear high-desert scenery and avoid the leeches and landslides of the wet south.
Is Upper Mustang good in the monsoon?+
Yes, Upper Mustang is one of Nepal's best monsoon trekking regions. Sheltered behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs in the rain shadow, it stays dry and clear through summer, making June to September a fine time to visit the walled city of Lo Manthang and its desert canyons.
Do rain-shadow treks need special permits?+
Yes. Most rain-shadow regions are restricted areas requiring a special restricted-area permit, a registered guide and often a minimum group size, in addition to standard trekking permits. Upper Mustang, Upper Dolpo and Nar Phu all fall under these rules, so arrange permits through a registered agency in advance.
