The Best Time to Visit Nuwakot

Autumn and spring bring the clearest views and best rafting — when to visit Nuwakot.

The best time to visit Nuwakot is autumn (October–November) and spring (March–April), when dry, stable weather brings the clearest Himalayan views from the ridge and the best water levels for Trishuli River rafting. Sitting at mid-elevation, Nuwakot is milder than the high mountains and pleasant for much of the year, but the shoulder seasons are unbeatable.

The short answer

For the best all-round trip, come in autumn or spring: clear skies, comfortable temperatures, great views and prime rafting. Winter is cool but sunny and quiet; the pre-monsoon months are hot and hazy; and the monsoon is green but wet, with cloud-hidden peaks and slower roads. Time a visit to mid-April for the colourful Sindur Jatra at the Bhairabi Temple.

Season by season

Autumn (October–November)

The peak season. Skies are at their clearest after the monsoon, temperatures are comfortable and the Himalaya stand out crisply from the Malika hilltop. The Trishuli runs clear and lively. This is the best time for the Nuwakot Durbar and the views — book ahead, as it is also the busiest.

Spring (March–April)

Warm, mostly clear and bright with blooming rhododendrons in the surrounding hills. Excellent for sightseeing and Trishuli rafting, and the time of the Sindur Jatra festival in mid-April.

Winter (December–February)

Cool but sunny, with quiet sights and often very clear mornings. Bring warm layers for chilly nights on the ridge. A peaceful time to wander the historic town.

Monsoon (June–September)

Lush and green but wet, with heavy rain, leeches and the risk of road delays on the winding approach. Views are often clouded, though the swollen Trishuli is powerful for experienced rafters.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Nuwakot?+

Autumn (October–November) and spring (March–April) are the best times. Both bring stable, dry weather, comfortable temperatures and the clearest views of the Himalaya from the ridge and the Malika hilltop, along with good water levels for Trishuli River rafting.

What is the weather like in Nuwakot?+

Nuwakot sits at mid-elevation in the hills, so it is milder than the high mountains and warmer than Kathmandu in the valley below. Autumn and spring are pleasant and clear, winter is cool but sunny, the pre-monsoon months are hot and hazy, and the monsoon (June–September) is warm, green and wet.

Can you visit Nuwakot in the monsoon?+

You can, and the hills are lush and green, but expect heavy rain, leeches, slippery trails and the risk of road delays or landslides on the winding approach. Mountain views are often hidden by cloud, though high monsoon flows make the Trishuli powerful for experienced rafters.

Are there festivals in Nuwakot?+

Yes. The Bhairabi Temple's vivid Sindur Jatra, held around the Nepali New Year in mid-April, is the area's signature festival, when devotees throw red vermilion in a riot of colour. The big national festivals of Dashain and Tihar in autumn are also celebrated across the district.
