Taplejung Trekking Collection

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek, the TMJ rhododendron ridge and the remote route to Olangchung Gola — Taplejung's treks.

Taplejung is one of Nepal's great trekking frontiers, offering everything from a multi-week expedition to the foot of the world's third-highest peak to a gentle spring walk through the largest rhododendron forest in the country. This collection brings together the district's trekking routes, from the demanding to the accessible, so you can match a trip to your time, fitness and goals.

The short answer

The headline route is the 20-24 day Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek, a remote restricted-area expedition for experienced trekkers. For a gentler option, the 3-5 day Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale rhododendron ridge needs no restricted permit and dazzles in spring. The most adventurous can extend north to the Tibetan trading village of Olangchung Gola, while rafters tackle the Tamur River by a trek-and-raft expedition.

The routes

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek is the classic far-east expedition, climbing through Limbu and Rai country to the glacial base camps of Kanchenjunga — often linking the north camp at Pangpema and the south camp at Oktang over the Mirgin La. It is long, high and lightly developed, with basic lodges and some camping.

The Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale ridge is the district's accessible gem: a flexible ridge walk through vast rhododendron forest, best in late March and April, with Himalayan views and modest altitude.

For true wilderness, the route to Olangchung Gola carries trekkers deep up the Tamur valley to a centuries-old Tibetan village near the border — usually as an extension of a Kanchenjunga trek.

Frequently asked questions

What treks start from Taplejung?+

Taplejung is the gateway to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek toward the world's third-highest peak, the gentler Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale rhododendron ridge walk, and remote extensions such as the route to the Tibetan border village of Olangchung Gola.

Which Taplejung trek is best for beginners?+

The Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale ridge is the most approachable — a relatively gentle three-to-five-day walk at modest altitude with no restricted-area permit. The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek, by contrast, is a long, demanding expedition for experienced trekkers.

Do Taplejung treks need permits?+

The Kanchenjunga region is a restricted area requiring a special permit, a conservation-area permit and a registered guide in a group. The Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale ridge does not need a restricted-area permit, making it far simpler to organise.

When is the best season for trekking in Taplejung?+

Autumn (October to early December) gives the clearest, most stable conditions, while spring (March to May) brings the rhododendron blooms. The monsoon is wet, leech-prone and landslide-prone, and high winter routes can be snowbound.
