Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale Rhododendron Trek
A gentle spring ridge trek through Nepal's largest rhododendron forest, with Kanchenjunga and Makalu views.
The Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale trek — the TMJ ridge — is the gentle counterpoint to the Kanchenjunga expeditions: a flexible three-to-five-day spring walk through what is celebrated as the rhododendron capital of Nepal, with sweeping views of Kanchenjunga and Makalu. It needs no restricted-area permit and sits at modest altitude, making it one of eastern Nepal's most approachable treks. For the ridge itself, see the Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale page.
The short answer
Walk the forested crest that straddles Taplejung, Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha, ideally in late March or April for peak bloom. There are several access points, so you can tailor the length, and no restricted permit is needed. Time it with the best time for the Kanchenjunga trek guide and sort beds with Taplejung homestays and logistics. It makes a fine warm-up within a wider Kanchenjunga trekking trip.
The route
The ridge holds one of the largest natural rhododendron forests in the world, with dozens of species. From around late March through April the hillsides erupt into colour, drawing photographers, botanists and walkers to one of Nepal's great spring spectacles. The walk follows the crest through this forest, with a string of viewpoints; higher sections such as Jaljale open onto broad Himalayan panoramas, and sunrise from the crest can reveal the eastern giants glowing above a sea of forest.
With no high passes or restricted-area permits, the gradient is forgiving and the logistics light. Lodging is in simple village teahouses and homestays along the way, and the flexible access points mean you can walk a short section or the full ridge.
Why trek it
TMJ is a flagship for Nepal's natural heritage — a vast, intact rhododendron forest that flowers on a scale few places can match. For trekkers it delivers big-mountain views and rich biodiversity, including red pandas in the surrounding forest, without the cost, altitude and logistics of a major expedition. It is the ideal eastern trek for those short on time or new to the Himalaya.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale trek?+
It is a flexible, relatively gentle trek of about three to five days along the ridge, with several access points. You can shorten or extend it depending on how much of the crest you walk, making it easy to fit around other Taplejung plans.
When do the rhododendrons bloom on the TMJ ridge?+
The rhododendrons peak in spring, roughly late March through April, when the hillsides blaze in red, pink and white. This is the best and most popular time to walk the ridge; outside spring the forest is green but without the famous flowers.
Do you need a permit for the Tinjure-Milke-Jaljale trek?+
No restricted-area permit is required for the TMJ ridge, unlike the high Kanchenjunga routes. This makes it far simpler and cheaper to organise, and you can walk it without joining a mandatory guided group, though a local guide is still helpful.
How hard is the rhododendron trek?+
It is one of eastern Nepal's most approachable treks — modest altitude, a forgiving gradient and no high passes. It suits walkers who want Himalayan scenery and forest without the cost, altitude and commitment of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek.
