Butwal as a Gateway: Lumbini, Tansen & Pokhara

Use Butwal as a base for Lumbini, the hill town of Tansen, Pokhara's lakes and nearby Devdaha.

Butwal's greatest asset for travellers is its position. Sitting at the junction of the East–West and Siddhartha highways, where the plains meet the hills, it is the natural gateway to a remarkable cluster of western Nepal's destinations — the Buddha's birthplace, a beautiful hill town, the country's lake capital and an ancient Buddhist heritage site, all within easy reach. Here is how to use the city as a base.

The short answer

From Butwal you can reach Lumbini and nearby Devdaha to the south in about an hour, climb north to the Newari hill town of Tansen in under two hours, and carry on to Pokhara in around five to six hours total. The Indian border at Sunauli is also just to the south. Start with how to get to Butwal for arrival options.

South to Lumbini and Devdaha

The most famous trip from Butwal heads south-west to Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, roughly an hour away via Bhairahawa. Closer to home, Devdaha — revered as the Buddha's maternal home — lies just east of the city. Together they make a rich Buddhist circuit; see the national overview in our guide to Buddhism in Nepal.

North to Tansen and Pokhara

Heading north, the Siddhartha Highway climbs out of the Tinau gorge past Siddhababa Temple and into the hills. After around 1.5 to 2 hours it reaches Tansen, a preserved Newari bazaar town in Palpa famous for its stepped lanes, old temples and the riverside Rani Mahal palace. Carry on and the same road delivers you to Pokhara, Nepal's lakeside adventure capital, in about five to six hours from Butwal.

Building an itinerary

A natural way to travel is to arrive in Butwal, explore the city and Devdaha, then branch out: a day or overnight south to Lumbini, and a journey north that pauses in Tansen before reaching Pokhara. This makes Butwal a hinge between the Buddhist Terai and the hill-and-lake country to the north. For the wider context, browse the best places to visit in Nepal.
