Chitlang Itinerary

A 1 to 2-day Chitlang plan: homestay, cheese farm, salt trail, temples and Kulekhani boating.

This Chitlang itinerary turns the valley's highlights into an easy one- or two-day trip from Kathmandu, balancing homestay hospitality with the cheese farm, the old salt trail, Newari heritage and Kulekhani boating. Use it as a flexible framework and let your homestay hosts fill in the local detail.

The short answer

With one night, arrive, settle into a homestay, tour the goat-cheese farm and walk the Newari temples and part of the salt-trade trail. With two nights, hike in over Chandragiri and add Kulekhani reservoir and Markhu.

Day 1 — Arrive and slow down

Choose your arrival: hike in on the Thankot–Chandragiri–Chitlang route for the full experience, or drive in via Kulekhani if you prefer comfort. Check into a homestay, eat a home-cooked lunch, then spend the afternoon at the goat-cheese farm and wandering the lanes past the valley's temples and shrines.

Day 2 — Trail and lake

Walk a longer stretch of the salt-trade trail in the cool morning, then drive to Kulekhani reservoir (Indra Sarovar) for a relaxed boat trip from Markhu and a fresh-fish lunch by the water before heading back to Kathmandu.

A one-day version

Short on time? It is possible to do Chitlang as a long day from Kathmandu: drive in early via Kulekhani, tour the goat-cheese farm, walk a short stretch of the salt trail and the temples, grab a homestay lunch, and pause at Markhu on the way back. You will miss the slow evening that is the heart of the experience, but it works as a taster if a night away isn't possible.

Make it longer

Add a third night to walk more of the valley's trails at leisure, time your visit to catch a local jatra, or combine Chitlang with a wider loop south of the capital. Travellers heading further afield sometimes link the valley with onward routes through Makwanpur, while those wanting pure rest simply settle into a homestay and do very little — which the valley rewards just as well.

Tips for a smooth trip

Decide your arrival method before you set off, since hiking in over Chandragiri and driving in via Kulekhani need different logistics. Pre-book your homestay, especially at weekends, and ask your hosts to arrange transport for the lake outing rather than relying on sparse public services. Carry enough cash for the whole trip, and keep your schedule loose — Chitlang is at its best when you let the valley set the pace.

Good to know
