Chitwan Cycling Tours
Explore Sauraha's Tharu villages, riverside and forest edges by bike — routes, hire and timing.
Swap the jeep for a bicycle
A Chitwan cycling tour is the most enjoyable way to slow down and see village life — and one of the most active entries in our Chitwan beyond the safari collection. The flat Terai roads around Sauraha are perfect for easy riding, threading past Tharu villages, mustard fields, the Rapti riverside and the edges of the community forests. Hire a bike from your lodge, set off early, and explore at a human pace, stopping wherever something catches your eye. It pairs well with mountain biking in Nepal if you're chasing more two-wheeled adventure elsewhere.
Where to ride
Several easy routes start right from Sauraha:
Village and riverside loop
A gentle two-to-three-hour loop rolls through Tharu villages with their mud-and-thatch homes, past paddy and mustard fields, and along the Rapti embankment. It's a relaxed introduction that pairs perfectly with a Tharu village tour.
Out to Bishazari Tal
For a bigger day, ride the back roads toward the Twenty Thousand Lakes wetland. This half-day route rewards you with quiet lanes and excellent birdlife at the lake; see our guide to visiting Bishazari Tal and remember a licensed guide is needed for the wetland trails themselves.
Forest-edge and farmland
Quiet tracks skirt the community forests and farmland, with good chances of spotting birds and, from a safe distance on the road, deer. Do not ride into the national park or onto forest tracks where rhinos roam without a guide.
Bikes and timing
Most lodges and guesthouses rent simple bicycles by the hour or day; a few operators offer better bikes and guided cycling tours. Always check the brakes and tyres first. Ride in the cool early morning or late afternoon to avoid the Terai heat, ideally in the dry season from October to March — plan around the best time to visit Nepal.
Tips
- Carry water, sun protection and a hat — there's little shade on open roads.
- Start early to dodge midday heat and catch the best birdlife.
- Stay off the highway and out of the park on a bike.
- End a ride with a Rapti riverside sunset.
Cycling turns a Chitwan stopover into a richer, more local experience. Plan the rest of your trip from the Chitwan travel guide.
