The Koshi Barrage Near Dharan
A vast river dam on the Saptakoshi south of Dharan, near Chatara and the Koshi Tappu birding wetlands.
The Koshi Barrage is a vast dam stretching across the Saptakoshi (Koshi) river south of Dharan, and one of the eastern plains' most striking landmarks. Its long line of gates spanning the broad river is an engineering sight in itself, and it sits at the doorstep of some of Nepal's finest birding country, making it a natural addition to a Dharan-area day trip.
What it is
Built in the 1960s as a joint Nepal–India project, the barrage was designed to tame the famously flood-prone Koshi — long nicknamed the "Sorrow of Bihar" — and to supply irrigation across the plains. The result is a kilometre-plus line of floodgates holding back and channelling the great river as it spreads from the hills onto the Terai. Standing on or near the structure, you grasp the sheer scale and power of the Saptakoshi, which gathers the meltwater of seven rivers draining the eastern Himalaya. It is a very different face of the river from the sacred ghats upstream.
Birds and the wetlands
The slow water and marshes created above the barrage have become a haven for wildlife. The adjoining Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is one of Nepal's premier birdwatching destinations, drawing tens of thousands of migratory waterbirds in winter alongside resident species, the country's last herds of wild water buffalo (arna), and Gangetic river dolphins in the Koshi's channels. Even a brief stop near the barrage in the cool season can turn up egrets, storks, ducks and waders in number. Serious birders should plan a dedicated visit to the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.
Combine it with the river's sacred side
The barrage pairs naturally with the holy riverside upstream at Chatara on the Koshi, where pilgrims bathe at the confluence near the Barahakshetra temple. Together the two stops show both faces of the Saptakoshi — sacred and engineered — and round out a half-day on the river from Dharan. It fits neatly into the wider things to do around Dharan cluster.
