Vijayapur Hill and Temples
A historic hill above Dharan, seat of the old Sen kingdom, crowned by temples and sweeping city views.
Vijayapur is the temple-crowned hill that rises directly above Dharan, and it is the historic and spiritual heart of the city. Once the capital of the Sen kingdom of Vijayapur, it now draws visitors for its cluster of revered shrines, its cool hilltop air and its sweeping views over the city and the Terai plains below.
A hill of history
Long before Dharan grew into the busy city it is today, Vijayapur was a seat of power. The Sen dynasty ruled an eastern hill kingdom from here in the centuries before Nepal's unification, and faint traces of the old fort, palace site and ponds survive on the hill. Walking the ridge, you are following ground that was once a royal capital — a layer of history that gives Vijayapur a depth beyond its temples. The name still attaches to the whole hill and the temple zone that crowns it.
The temples
Vijayapur's enduring fame comes from its shrines. The hilltop Dantakali temple, a revered Shakti Peetha, is one of eastern Nepal's most important goddess sites, while the calm Pindeshwar complex is a major Shaiva centre that draws crowds at Maha Shivaratri. The quirky Budhasubba temple, with its grove of headless bamboo, sits nearby on the same temple-rich hill. Pilgrims and visitors move between them along the Dharan temple circuit, making Vijayapur the natural focus of any temple day in the city. For the individual shrines, see the Dantakali Temple and Pindeshwar Temple pins.
Views and the cable car
Beyond worship, Vijayapur is simply a fine place to be. The hill catches a cool breeze even when the city swelters, and the lookouts take in the spread of Dharan, the broad plains and, on clear days, the line of the eastern hills. A cable car now links the city to the hilltop, making the climb easy for those who would rather not tackle the temple steps, and there are tea stalls and quiet spots to sit at the top.
