Juphal Airstrip

The cliff-top airstrip that is Dolpo's main gateway — a short flight from Nepalgunj and the trailhead for Phoksundo Lake.

Juphal — officially Dolpa Airport — is the cliff-top STOL airstrip at about 2,500 m that serves as the main gateway to Dolpo. Reached by a short, weather-dependent flight from Nepalgunj, it is the trailhead from which almost every journey to Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa begins, since no road connects the region to the rest of Nepal.

What to expect

The landing at Juphal, on a short strip perched on a hillside above the Thuli Bheri valley, is a memorable start to any Dolpo trip. Small fixed-wing aircraft drop in over ridgelines onto the strip, and the views on approach — terraced fields, a deep river gorge and snow peaks beyond — set the tone for the region. From the airstrip the trail drops to Dunai, the district headquarters about two to three hours' walk below, where treks form up, hire porters and buy last supplies before following the Suligad valley toward Ringmo and the lake.

Juphal itself is a small settlement with a handful of basic lodges and teahouses clustered around the strip — enough for a night if your onward flight or trek is delayed, but not a destination in itself. Most travellers spend only as long here as the logistics demand.

Why flights matter so much

Because there is no through road linking Dolpo to the rest of Nepal, the Juphal flight is not just convenient — it is effectively the only practical way in and out. That makes the airstrip a single point of failure for any itinerary. Flights run seasonally and only in good visibility, so cancellations and multi-day delays are common, especially when monsoon cloud builds over the approach from Nepalgunj. Experienced travellers build buffer days into both ends of the trip and avoid booking tight international connections out of Kathmandu immediately after a Dolpo trek. Weight limits on the small aircraft are strict, so pack light and expect your gear to be weighed. Despite the unpredictability, the flight remains one of the most spectacular short hops in Nepalese aviation.

Good to know

  • Weather: Flights only run in clear conditions and are often delayed or cancelled — build in buffer days at Nepalgunj.
  • Logistics: Plan the full chain of flights in how to get to Dolpo, and see where it fits in getting around Nepal.
  • Permits: Carry your restricted-area paperwork from the start — read Dolpo permits and access before you fly. The strip is the staging point for the Upper Dolpo trek.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Juphal airstrip?+

Juphal (Dolpa Airport) sits at about 2,500 m on a hillside above the Thuli Bheri valley in Dolpa district, Karnali Province. It is the principal air gateway to Dolpo and the usual trailhead for routes to Phoksundo Lake and Upper Dolpo.

How do you fly to Juphal?+

Most travellers fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, overnight there, then take a short morning flight on a small fixed-wing aircraft to Juphal. Flights operate seasonally and are very weather-dependent, so building in buffer days is essential.

Is the flight to Juphal safe?+

Juphal is a short STOL strip in mountainous terrain, so flights only run in good visibility and are frequently delayed or cancelled by weather. Operators use experienced pilots, but travellers should keep flexible plans and travel insurance that covers mountain flights.

What is at Juphal?+

Juphal is a small mountain settlement with the airstrip, a few basic lodges and teahouses, and the start of the trail down to Dunai, the district headquarters. There are no roads connecting it to the rest of Nepal, so onward travel is on foot.
