Komrong Danda Ridge

A forested ridge above Ghandruk with wide Annapurna views, on the trail toward Tadapani and Chhomrong.

Address
Komrong Danda, above Ghandruk, Kaski, Gandaki Province

Komrong Danda is a forested ridge above Ghandruk on the well-trodden trail toward Tadapani and Chhomrong, prized for its wide Annapurna and Machhapuchhre views and its rhododendron and oak woods. It is the natural next step for anyone who wants to stretch a Ghandruk visit into a half-day walk, or the first leg for trekkers heading deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary.

What to expect

The trail climbs steadily from Ghandruk through terraced fields and into shady forest, reaching the ridge and its scatter of teahouses after a couple of hours. From open spots along the way the front range of the Annapurnas swings into view — Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and the Fishtail — often clearest in the early morning before cloud gathers. In spring the rhododendron forests that cloak the ridge blaze red, pink and white, one of the great seasonal sights of the lower Annapurnas.

Komrong Danda is a junction as much as a viewpoint. From the ridge the trail forks: one branch continues toward Tadapani and the Ghorepani–Poon Hill loop, the other drops to the Komrong Khola and climbs toward Chhomrong, the gateway to Annapurna Base Camp. That makes it a key link in the lower Annapurna trail network.

For day visitors based in Ghandruk, the walk up to Komrong Danda and back makes an excellent half-day outing that turns a simple village stay into something more active, without the commitment of a multi-day trek. The teahouses along the ridge are good places to pause for tea or a plate of dal bhat, and the forest stretches are shady and cool even when the lower terraces feel warm. Birdlife is plentiful in the oak and rhododendron canopy, and the changing perspective on Machhapuchhre as you climb is a quiet reward in itself. Going slowly and turning back when you have had enough is perfectly fine — the views improve steadily from the moment you leave the village.
