How to Get to Hetauda

Reaching Hetauda from Kathmandu, Chitwan or the Terai by expressway, Rajpath or BP Highway.

You reach Hetauda by road from almost every direction, which is exactly why it is one of central Nepal's great gateway towns. From Kathmandu you can take the fast Kathmandu–Terai corridor or the scenic old Tribhuvan Rajpath over Daman; from the south and east the city is an easy drive on the BP Highway and the East–West Highway. There is no major airport, so the journey itself is part of the experience.

From Kathmandu

Two very different routes link the capital to Hetauda:

  • Fast corridor: the quicker, more direct option, getting you to Hetauda in a few hours.
  • Tribhuvan Rajpath: the historic mountain road over the ridge at Daman, much longer and full of switchbacks but unforgettable for its views. See it as a road trip in its own right.

Frequent buses serve both broad directions; for comfort, many travellers hire a car and driver.

From Chitwan, Birgunj and the east

Coming up from the Terai, Hetauda is a short drive of a couple of hours from Chitwan and from the border town of Birgunj on the East–West Highway. From the east, the BP Highway delivers you to the city through the hills, completing Hetauda's role as a crossroads. This makes the city a natural pivot point: travellers crossing between the Indian border, the national parks of the plains and the capital frequently break their journey here, which is why so many buses funnel through its bus park.

By bus

Public buses are the workhorse of travel to Hetauda, and the city is exceptionally well served. Frequent day buses and microbuses run from Kathmandu, while regular services connect Chitwan, Birgunj and towns to the east. Tourist coaches are less common than on the Kathmandu–Pokhara corridor, so most visitors travel on standard local or long-distance buses. Buy tickets at the bus park or from agents, and aim for a daytime departure to enjoy the scenery and arrive in good light.

Getting around once there

Hetauda's centre, parks and avenues are walkable, while taxis handle trips out to Makwanpur Gadhi and Kailash Cave. The city bus park is the hub for onward services across central Nepal.
