• Thamel — the tourist heart: central, walkable and packed with hotels at every price, plus restaurants, gear shops and tour agencies. Best for first-timers and trek prep; the trade-off is noise, so ask for a room off the main lanes.
• Lazimpat — quieter and more upmarket, a short taxi ride north, with several heritage and boutique stays.
• Durbar Marg — the city's smartest address, home to its top-end hotels and fine dining, and still very central.
• Boudha — calm and Tibetan in feel, clustered around the great stupa; lovely if you want serenity, though the main sights are a taxi ride away.
• Patan/Jhamsikhel — arty and cafe-filled across the river, good for slower or repeat visitors.

Prices climb in the busy autumn season, so the same room can cost noticeably more in October than during the monsoon.

When to book

Autumn (October–November) is peak trekking season and the busiest time for city hotels; spring (March–April) is the next busiest. Popular heritage properties and well-reviewed guesthouses fill up early for these months, so book several weeks ahead if you have your heart set on a particular place. What to check before you book

• Noise — in Thamel, ask for a room away from the street and any rooftop bars.
