Hotel Shanker

Hotel Shanker is one of Kathmandu's signature heritage stays: a striking white Rana palace from the 1890s set behind a large lawn in the leafy Lazimpat district. It trades the polish of a modern five-star for character, columns and corridors lined with old photographs.

Location

Lazimpat is a calmer, slightly upmarket neighbourhood just north of Thamel. Long an embassy district, it keeps a more residential feel than the tourist core while staying within easy reach of it. The main road is dotted with cafes, bakeries and a handful of restaurants, so you rarely have to go far for a coffee or a meal. Getting there

Most visitors arrive by taxi. From Tribhuvan International Airport it's a straightforward drive across the city; agree a fare before you set off, or ask whether the hotel can arrange a pickup — many Kathmandu properties will on request. From Thamel you can walk, roughly ten minutes on foot heading north, though a short taxi or ride-hail trip is easy enough if you're carrying bags. The palace and its grounds

The building is the reason to stay. It's a converted neoclassical Rana palace — white-plastered, colonnaded and grand in the way those aristocratic mansions were built to be — and the large garden out front is its best feature, a rare stretch of green in a dense city. Expect period architecture and old-world proportions rather than the streamlined efficiency of a new build; that trade-off is the whole point.
