Narayanhiti Palace Museum is Nepal's former royal palace, standing on Durbar Marg in the centre of Kathmandu. After Nepal abolished its monarchy in 2008, the palace was opened to the public as a museum, giving visitors a rare walk through the grand state rooms and private quarters of the country's last kings.

Inside the former palace

The visit takes you through reception halls, throne rooms and the residential wings, furnished much as they were left. The palace is also tied to one of Nepal's most painful modern events — the 2001 royal massacre, in which most of the royal family died. The original building where it occurred was pulled down, and its footprint is part of the grounds you walk through.
