The Best Day Trips from Kathmandu
Patan, Chandragiri and Dhulikhel, plus the heritage towns of Bhaktapur and Nagarkot — the easiest escapes from the city.
The Kathmandu Valley packs centuries of temples, hill stations and mountain viewpoints within an hour or two of the city. You can be wandering medieval streets or riding a cable car to a Himalaya viewpoint and still be back in Thamel for dinner. Here are the best day trips, all easy half-day or full-day escapes.
The short answer
For a half-day, ride the cable car up Chandragiri Hills for valley and Himalaya views, or wander the temples of Patan Durbar Square just south of the city. For a full day, head east to the Newar hill town of Dhulikhel, or visit the heritage towns of Bhaktapur and Nagarkot on the valley's eastern rim.

Good to know
- Patan (Lalitpur): Around 30 minutes from Thamel, this is the easiest half-day trip — the finest Newari architecture in the valley around the Krishna Mandir. See the Patan Durbar Square pin.
- Chandragiri Hills: A cable car from the valley rim to a 2,550 m hilltop with Himalaya panoramas and a hilltop temple — an easy half-day. See Chandragiri Hills.
- Dhulikhel: A traditional Newar town about 30 km east, known for sunrise mountain views and short hikes — a relaxed full-day trip. See Dhulikhel.
- Bhaktapur: The best-preserved medieval town in the valley, with its Durbar Square and pottery quarter. Browse the Bhaktapur hub for a half-day or full-day visit.
- Nagarkot: A ridge-top village famous for its Himalaya sunrise; pair it with Bhaktapur on the way. See the Nagarkot hub.
Getting around
All of these are reachable by taxi from Thamel — agree a return fare or have the driver wait, especially at Chandragiri and Dhulikhel where return taxis are scarce. Shared jeeps and local buses run to Bhaktapur, Dhulikhel and Nagarkot if you prefer to travel on a budget. For the best mountain views, set out early before the midday haze builds.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best day trips from Kathmandu?+
The easiest are Patan (Lalitpur) Durbar Square for Newari temples, the Chandragiri Hills cable car for Himalaya views, and the hill town of Dhulikhel. The heritage towns of Bhaktapur and Nagarkot also make excellent half-day or full-day trips from the city.
How far in advance should I plan a day trip from Kathmandu?+
Most trips need no booking — just a taxi or a seat in a shared jeep on the day. The exceptions are the Chandragiri cable car at busy weekends, when arriving early avoids queues, and the Nagarkot or Dhulikhel sunrise, which is best done by staying overnight or leaving very early.
Can you see the Himalayas on a day trip from Kathmandu?+
Yes, on a clear day. Chandragiri Hills, Nagarkot and Dhulikhel all sit on the valley rim and offer wide Himalaya panoramas, with Everest visible from some viewpoints when the sky is clear. Autumn (October to November) gives the most reliable mountain views.
Do I need a guide for a Kathmandu day trip?+
Not for most places — Patan, Chandragiri, Bhaktapur and Dhulikhel are easy to visit independently by taxi. A guide adds useful context at the Durbar Squares and museums, but it is not essential to enjoy any of these trips.
