Dhulikhel is a Newar hill town perched on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, about 30 km from the city. Long a trading post on the route to Tibet, it is now best known for its wide sunrise views of the Himalaya, its traditional old town and the gentle hikes that fan out into the surrounding hills.

What to expect

The draw is the sunrise, when a long stretch of the Himalaya glows above the ridgelines — best caught from a hotel terrace or a viewpoint above town. The compact old town rewards a slow wander, with brick houses, carved windows and small temples. For a half-day on foot, the walk to the Namobuddha monastery is the classic outing.

Good to know

  • Stay overnight: The sunrise is the highlight, so many visitors stay a night rather than rushing back.
  • Time needed: A full day, or an overnight trip combined with the Namobuddha hike.
  • Getting there: About an hour to 90 minutes by taxi or bus along the Arniko Highway.

Dhulikhel features in our guide to the best day trips from Kathmandu. It sits close to the sunrise ridge of Nagarkot, so the two pair well; for a valley-rim trip on the other side, try Chandragiri Hills.
