Address
Patan (Lalitpur), Kathmandu Valley

Patan Durbar Square sits in the city of Lalitpur, just across the river from central Kathmandu and only about 30 minutes from Thamel. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it holds the finest concentration of Newari architecture in the valley — and a calmer, more lived-in feel than the busier squares.

What to see

The square's centrepiece is the Krishna Mandir, a 17th-century temple carved entirely in stone, surrounded by tiered pagodas, courtyards and ornate windows. The restored royal palace houses the Patan Museum, one of the best museums in Nepal for understanding Hindu and Buddhist art. The surrounding lanes are still home to metalwork artisans who hammer out statues and ritual objects much as their families have for generations.

Good to know

  • Time needed: Allow two to three hours for the square and museum.
  • Best for: An easy half-day trip, paired with lunch in one of the rooftop cafés overlooking the temples.
  • Getting there: Around 30 minutes by taxi from Thamel; agree a fare before you set off.

Patan pairs naturally with the valley's other escapes. From here you could ride the cable car up Chandragiri Hills or head east to the hill town of Dhulikhel — both feature in our guide to the best day trips from Kathmandu.
