Kathmandu Layover Guide (4 to 12 Hours)
Make the most of a Kathmandu layover — what to see in 4 to 12 hours, airport transfers and visa-on-arrival tips.
A Kathmandu layover is just enough to taste the city — if you plan around your hours and the airport's location. Tribhuvan International Airport sits in the east of town, close to two of the capital's greatest sights, so even a short stop can deliver a real Nepal moment. Here is what to do by how much time you have.
The short answer
With 4 to 6 hours, clear immigration, take a taxi to Boudhanath or Pashupatinath (both 15 to 30 minutes away) and return. With 6 to 9 hours, add the old city — Kathmandu Durbar Square or a quick Thamel wander. With 9 to 12 hours, you can comfortably pair Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, eat lunch and still see a Durbar Square. Always leave 2 to 3 hours to get back and check in.
What to do by time
- 4–6 hours: Pick the nearest icon. The great stupa at Boudhanath is only 15 to 20 minutes from the airport, while sacred Pashupatinath is similarly close — choose one, walk the kora or ghats, then head straight back.
- 6–9 hours: Add the old city. After Boudhanath, ride into Kathmandu Durbar Square for its pagodas and the Kumari's courtyard, with time for a quick lunch.
- 9–12 hours: Do the eastern pair — Boudhanath and Pashupatinath sit close together — then continue to Durbar Square or a short Thamel stroll before the journey back.
Getting in and out
- From the airport: The simplest route is a prepaid or app-hailed taxi; our airport to Thamel guide explains fares, the prepaid desk and ride-hailing apps.
- Visa on arrival: To leave the airport you must enter Nepal. Most nationalities get a visa on arrival — carry a passport photo and cash for the fee, and allow time for the queue.
- Buffer your return: Leave 2 to 3 hours before departure for traffic, check-in and security, and more at rush hour or during festivals.
Make the most of a short stop
Keep your plan tight and your bags light, and treat the layover as a sampler rather than a full visit. If your stop stretches longer, the things to do by mood collection and the Kathmandu hub help you build a fuller day. Even a few hours here can turn a transit into a highlight.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Kathmandu layover long enough to leave the airport?+
Yes, if you have at least four to five hours. Boudhanath and Pashupatinath are the two closest major sights to Tribhuvan International Airport, roughly 15 to 30 minutes away by taxi depending on traffic, so a short layover is enough to see one of them. For anything in the old city, give yourself six hours or more.
Do I need a visa for a Kathmandu layover?+
If you leave the airport you will need to enter Nepal, which for most nationalities means a visa on arrival — bring a passport photo, cash for the fee and allow time for the queue. If you stay airside in transit you do not need a visa, but Tribhuvan's transit facilities are limited. Check the requirements for your nationality in advance.
How far is Kathmandu airport from the city sights?+
Tribhuvan International Airport sits in the east of the city. Boudhanath is the nearest major sight at around 15 to 20 minutes by taxi, Pashupatinath is similar, and Thamel and Durbar Square are roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Build in generous buffer time, as Kathmandu traffic is unpredictable.
How much time should I leave to get back to the airport?+
Allow at least two to three hours before your departure for the journey plus check-in and security, and more during rush hour or festival days. Tribhuvan can be slow at peak times, so do not cut your return tight.
