Pharping to Champadevi Pilgrimage Hike

A forest climb from Pharping to Champadevi, the sacred 2,278 m peak crowning the valley's southern rim, with Himalayan panoramas.

The Pharping to Champadevi hike climbs to the highest point on the Kathmandu Valley's southern rim — the sacred peak of Champadevi (2,278 m) — and it is one of the finest pilgrimage walks within easy reach of the city. Start at the temple town of Pharping, about an hour south of Kathmandu, and follow a forested ridge trail up to a summit crowned by a small Buddhist stupa and a shrine to the goddess Champadevi, honoured by Buddhists and Hindus alike.

The short answer

Take a taxi or bus to Pharping (around 19 km south of the city) and pick up the ridge trail near Hattiban. The climb is a steady 800-metre ascent through rhododendron, oak and pine forest, taking about 2.5 to 3.5 hours one way. At the top, a stupa and the Champadevi shrine sit on a knife-edge ridge with views over the whole valley and, on clear mornings, north to the Langtang and Ganesh Himal. Allow 5 to 6 hours round trip, and start early.

On the trail

The path leaves the cultivated land around Pharping and enters the forest of the southern hills, part of the same wooded belt that holds the Hattiban climbing crag. It climbs steadily, with a few false summits, before the final pull to the ridge. The forest is alive with birds and, in spring, rhododendron blossom. There is little water on the way, so carry your own.

Strong walkers can extend the ridge west toward Bhasmasur peak, or descend the far side toward Pikhel and the Dakshinkali road. Many pilgrims and locals combine the climb with a visit to the sacred sites clustered around Pharping itself.

Combine it with Pharping's temples

Pharping is one of the most important spiritual centres in the valley, so it is worth building a fuller day around the hike. Before or after the climb, walk the Dakshinkali to Pharping route to see the Asura Cave, where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated, and the gilded Vajrayogini gompa of Pharping. A short drive away, the cave shrine of Bishankhu Narayan makes a gentle add-on.
