Spring Rhododendron Hikes Near Kathmandu
Walk the valley rim when the lali gurans blooms — Phulchowki and Shivapuri forests in red and pink from March to April.
If you want colour on the trail, hike the Kathmandu Valley rim in spring. From March into April, the forests of the surrounding hills erupt with lali gurans — the red rhododendron that is Nepal's national flower — turning whole slopes red, pink and white. It is the second-best hiking season after autumn: the days are warm and comfortable, and while the air is often hazier so the big peaks hide more, the bloom more than makes up for it.
When the bloom peaks
Rhododendrons flower from low to high, so timing matters. Lower slopes colour first in early March, and the higher forest follows as the weeks warm, with the tall stands on Phulchowki among the last to peak. Late March is usually the safest single bet for a full display, but the exact timing shifts a little year to year — ask locally before you commit to a date.

Spring hiking tips
Days are warm, so carry sun protection and plenty of water, but pack a light layer for the higher summits where the air stays cool. Pre-monsoon haze tends to thicken by midday, so an early start gives you both the best light on the flowers and your best shot at a mountain view.
