Tarebhir Cliff Hike

A short hike to Tarebhir, a dramatic clifftop viewpoint over the Kathmandu Valley.

Tarebhir is a dramatic clifftop on the southern foothills of Shivapuri, above the Gokarna and Jorpati edge of Kathmandu. A short, steep day hike leads to its exposed rock perch, where the ground drops away to a long, vertigo-inducing view over the eastern Kathmandu Valley. It is one of the most photogenic short walks linked to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park.

The hike

The trail climbs from the Gokarna / Jorpati side of the valley, near the Gokarna Mahadev temple, and reaches the clifftop in roughly 1 to 2 hours. It is moderate rather than long, but the path is steep in places and the cliff edge is genuinely exposed — there are no railings, so stay back from the lip, watch children closely and take extra care when the rock is wet. The reward is the sheer drop and the wide outlook across the city and the green valley floor.

The view

Tarebhir faces roughly east, which makes it a favourite sunrise spot — see our roundup of the best viewpoints in Nepal. Arriving before dawn, you watch the light fill the valley with the urban sprawl and surrounding hills below. The cliff face itself is the photographic draw, a clean vertical wall unusual so close to the city.

Getting there and permits

The trailhead is reached by taxi from central Kathmandu via Jorpati and Gokarna, about 40 minutes, and a short stretch of road can be driven before the path turns to foot trail. Because parts of these foothills fall within Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, a park entry fee may apply depending on the gate and route you use, so carry cash in Nepali rupees to be safe.

When to go and what to bring

Hike Tarebhir between October and April for dry, safe footing and clear views; avoid wet conditions on the exposed sections. Bring water, good shoes with grip and sun protection. For more short walks on the north rim, see the gentle Nagi Gompa hike, the wider best day hikes near Kathmandu guide, and pair the morning with the Sleeping Vishnu temple at Budhanilkantha or plan from the Kathmandu hub.
