Telkot to Nagarkot Hike
A short, steady forest climb from Telkot on the Bhaktapur road up to the Nagarkot ridge.
The Telkot to Nagarkot hike is the classic way to earn the Nagarkot view — a short but steady uphill climb from the Bhaktapur road through forest and farmland to the famous sunrise ridge. It is one of the most accessible ascending routes in our eastern valley rim hikes collection, and a satisfying alternative to driving the whole way up.
The short answer
Climb from Telkot, on the Bhaktapur–Nagarkot road, up to the Nagarkot ridge — about 6 to 8 kilometres over two and a half to three and a half hours. It is moderate, almost entirely uphill, gaining a few hundred metres to reach Nagarkot at around 2,175 m, with its Himalayan panorama and sunrise viewpoints waiting at the top.
The route
Telkot sits on the lower eastern slopes, a road junction easily reached from Bhaktapur by bus or taxi. From there the trail leaves the tarmac and climbs through pine and rhododendron forest, mixed with terraced fields and small farming hamlets. The path is steady rather than steep, with the Kathmandu Valley falling away behind you as you gain height. The last stretch joins the ridge near the Nagarkot viewpoints.
At the top
Nagarkot is the eastern rim's best-known mountain balcony, famed for a sunrise panorama that on clear mornings runs from the Annapurnas and Manaslu across Langtang and Ganesh Himal to the Everest massif. Climbing up rather than driving lets you arrive in the late afternoon, settle in, and be on the ridge for first light.
Good to know
- This is an uphill route, so start with energy and water to spare.
- Stay overnight on the ridge to catch the sunrise; the descent options are easier.
- Wear good shoes; the forest path can be slippery after rain.
- Carry cash for tea stops; facilities thin out on the climb.
Combine it
Telkot pairs well with a downhill return on the Nagarkot to Changunarayan hike the next day. For other ways up to the ridge, compare the Tinchuli to Nagarkot hike and the longer Sankhu to Nagarkot hike. Frequently asked questions
How long is the Telkot to Nagarkot hike?+
It is a short walk of about 6 to 8 kilometres, taking roughly two and a half to three and a half hours. Because it climbs steadily from Telkot up to the Nagarkot ridge, it feels harder than its distance suggests, so allow extra time on the ascent.
Where is Telkot?+
Telkot is a small settlement and road junction on the Bhaktapur to Nagarkot road, on the lower eastern slopes of the Kathmandu Valley. It is an easy starting point reached by bus or taxi from Bhaktapur, and the usual lower trailhead for walking up to Nagarkot.
Is the Telkot to Nagarkot hike difficult?+
It is moderate. The route is mostly uphill on forest paths and quiet lanes, gaining a few hundred metres to the ridge, so a basic level of fitness helps. The reward is the Himalayan panorama from Nagarkot at the top.
Can you do the hike for sunrise?+
Most walkers climb up during the day and stay overnight, then watch the sunrise from the ridge the next morning. Hiking up in the dark for sunrise is possible but not recommended without a guide, as the forest trail is unlit and easy to lose.
