Best Time to Visit Makalu

Autumn and spring bring clear skies and safe passes for the base camp trek — a month-by-month guide to Makalu's seasons.

The best time to visit Makalu is autumn (October to November) or spring (March to May), when skies are clearest and the high passes leading to base camp are open and safe. The monsoon and deep winter are both poor choices for this remote, high route — here is how the year breaks down.

The short answer

Aim for autumn for the most stable weather and sharpest mountain views, or spring for warmer days and blooming rhododendron forest. Avoid the monsoon (leeches, cloud, landslides and unreliable flights) and midwinter (snow-blocked passes). Match your dates to the Makalu Base Camp trek route and confirm logistics in the Makalu trekking guide.

Season by season

Autumn (October–November)

The prime window. Post-monsoon air is crisp and clear, the passes are usually snow-free, and the high peaks stand out sharply. Days are pleasant and nights cold, with the most reliable Tumlingtar flights of the year. This is the busiest period, though "busy" on Makalu still means very few trekkers.

Spring (March–May)

The second-best season, prized for warmth and colour as rhododendrons bloom in the temperate forest. Wildlife, including the elusive red panda, is more active. Skies are good early on but grow hazier and cloudier into late May as the pre-monsoon builds.

Monsoon (June–September)

The worst time. Heavy rain swells rivers, triggers landslides and fills the lower forests with leeches, while cloud hides the mountains and flights to Tumlingtar are frequently grounded.

Winter (December–February)

Bitterly cold, with the Shipton La and Keke La often impassable under snow. Base camp is hard to reach and only suited to fully equipped, experienced parties.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to trek Makalu Base Camp?+

Autumn (October to November) and spring (March to May) are the best windows. Autumn brings the clearest, most stable skies after the monsoon, while spring adds blooming rhododendrons, with warmer days but more haze later in the season.

Can you trek to Makalu in winter?+

Winter (December to February) is very cold and the high passes — Shipton La and Keke La — are often blocked by deep snow, making base camp hard or impossible to reach. Only well-equipped, experienced parties should attempt it.

Is the monsoon a good time to visit Makalu?+

No. The monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain, cloud, landslides and abundant leeches in the lower forests, plus unreliable Tumlingtar flights. Views are poor and trails are difficult, so it is the worst season for the trek.

What is the weather like at Makalu Base Camp?+

Base camp sits near 4,870 metres, so even in peak season days are cool and nights drop below freezing. Autumn offers the most stable conditions; spring is milder by day but cloudier in the afternoons. Come prepared for cold at all times.
