Red Panda Habitat in Makalu
Temperate rhododendron and bamboo forests of Makalu Barun National Park — a key refuge for Nepal's elusive red panda.
The forests of Makalu Barun National Park are one of eastern Nepal's most important red panda habitats — a refuge for the shy, russet-coated mammal that depends on intact temperate woodland. For wildlife-minded trekkers, the chance, however slim, of glimpsing one adds a thrilling extra dimension to the long journey toward Makalu.
Where red pandas live
Red pandas favour the mossy, mid-altitude forests roughly between 2,200 and 3,800 metres, where stands of oak, rhododendron and fir are tangled with the bamboo that makes up the bulk of their diet. These conditions are found in parts of the lower Barun Valley and the buffer-zone forests around villages like Seduwa and Tashigaon, within the protected Makalu Barun National Park.
Spotting them
Be realistic: red pandas are solitary, mostly crepuscular and superbly camouflaged, so sightings are rare even where they are present. Your best odds come in spring and autumn, around dawn and dusk, moving quietly with a local guide who knows the feeding trees. Far more often you will see signs — droppings, claw marks, flattened bamboo — than the animal itself, but the search is reason enough to slow down and watch the forest.
Why it matters
Red pandas are globally threatened by habitat loss and poaching, and Nepal's surviving populations cluster in protected eastern forests like these. Visiting responsibly — staying on trails, keeping noise down and supporting community conservation — helps the buffer-zone programmes that protect both the panda and its woods.
