Makalu Barun National Park

A pristine eastern Himalayan park from subtropical gorge to glacier, home to red panda, snow leopard and the Makalu Base Camp trail.

Makalu Barun National Park is one of the most pristine protected areas in the Himalaya — a vast, roadless sweep of eastern Nepal that climbs from subtropical river gorge at a few hundred metres to the glaciers and 8,000-metre summits around Makalu. Established in 1992 and run with an adjoining buffer zone, it is the wild stage on which the entire Makalu Base Camp trek plays out.

What makes it special

Few parks on earth pack so many ecosystems into one area. Within a single valley the Barun Valley rises through dense subtropical and broadleaf forest, temperate rhododendron and conifer woods, alpine meadow and finally raw glacier. That altitudinal range supports an exceptional diversity of life — the park is celebrated as a red panda habitat and also shelters snow leopard, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer and Himalayan tahr, alongside thousands of flowering plant species and hundreds of birds.

A conservation landscape

The park borders Tibet to the north and abuts Sagarmatha National Park to the west, forming part of a great trans-boundary conservation corridor. Its buffer-zone communities — Rai, Sherpa and other groups in villages such as Seduwa and Tashigaon — help manage the forest and run the basic lodges and campsites that trekkers depend on.

Visiting the park

Almost all visitors enter on foot via the Num and Seduwa trailheads, reached by road from Khandbari bazaar and the Arun Valley around Tumlingtar. There are no internal roads, so exploring the park means trekking, with the high country accessible only seasonally.

Good to know

  • Permits: Buy a national park permit and TIMS card before heading up from Khandbari.
  • Pristine ethos: Carry out all waste and stick to trails — this is one of Nepal's least disturbed ecosystems.
  • Wider context: Compare it with Nepal's other national parks and read about the country's wildlife.
  • Timing: Forests are leech-prone in the monsoon; plan around the best time to visit Makalu.
