Manang to Muktinath
Over the 5,416m Thorong La from Manang to the sacred Muktinath temple in Mustang — route and timing.
The Manang to Muktinath stage is the grand finale of the high Annapurna Circuit: three to four days from Manang over the 5,416m Thorong La pass, then a long, steep descent into Mustang to the sacred temple of Muktinath at about 3,800m. It is the crossing the whole Manang on the Annapurna Circuit cluster builds toward, linking the green Marsyangdi side to the arid trans-Himalayan world beyond.
The route
From Manang the trail climbs in stages to Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi or High Camp, detailed in the Thorong La pass from Manang guide. On crossing day you start before dawn, top out on the prayer-flag-draped pass, then begin the punishing descent — over 1,600m down — into the Jhong valley to Muktinath. The change of landscape is striking: from snow and scree to ochre cliffs and Tibetan-style villages.
Muktinath: the sacred reward
Muktinath is one of Nepal's holiest pilgrimage sites, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Its temple to Vishnu is famous for 108 water spouts ringing the courtyard, where pilgrims bathe for purification, and an eternal natural flame fed by ground gas burning beside a spring inside the nearby Jwala Mai temple. Hindus know the site as Mukti Kshetra, a place of liberation, while Buddhists revere it as Chumig Gyatsa. After days above the treeline, arriving here on foot — rather than by jeep as many pilgrims do — carries real weight. For the wider pilgrimage context and the onward road, see the national guide on the Pokhara to Jomsom and Muktinath route.
Safety and timing
This is altitude-and-weather terrain, not a technical climb. Cross early to beat the wind, and never attempt the pass without proper acclimatization — use the Manang acclimatization day hikes and the national altitude sickness in Nepal primer. Time the crossing for spring or autumn using the best time to trek to Manang; winter snow can close the pass entirely.
Good to know
- Knees first: The descent is harder than the climb for many — trekking poles help.
- Onward travel: Muktinath is road-connected, so you can jeep to Jomsom and on to Pokhara rather than walking the lower valley.
- Plan ahead: Confirm permits and logistics with the Annapurna Circuit trek overview before you set out from Manang village.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to walk from Manang to Muktinath?+
Allow three to four days from Manang to Muktinath, staging via Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi or High Camp before crossing the Thorong La pass. Crossing-day itself is long — a pre-dawn start, the 5,416m pass, then a steep descent of well over 1,600m to Muktinath at about 3,800m.
What is Muktinath and why does it matter?+
Muktinath at about 3,800m in Mustang is one of Nepal's most sacred sites, holy to both Hindus and Buddhists, centred on a temple to Vishnu with 108 water spouts and an eternal natural flame. For Annapurna Circuit trekkers it is the symbolic reward at the end of the high crossing from Manang.
Is the descent to Muktinath hard?+
Yes — the drop from the 5,416m Thorong La to Muktinath is long and steep, losing well over 1,600m in a single day on tired legs. Many trekkers find the descent harder on the knees than the climb. Trekking poles help, and an early pass crossing leaves time to descend before the weather turns.
Can you get transport from Muktinath?+
Yes. Muktinath is connected by road, so from here you can take a jeep down to Jomsom and on toward Pokhara rather than walking the lower Kali Gandaki. Many trekkers finish the high section at Muktinath and continue by vehicle, which shortens the classic Annapurna Circuit considerably.
