Praken Gompa
A tiny cliff-perched hermitage above Manang where trekkers receive a blessing before the high pass.
Praken Gompa is a tiny Tibetan Buddhist hermitage perched in the cliffs directly above Manang village, famous as the place where a resident lama gives trekkers a protective blessing before they head toward the Thorong La pass. The short, steep climb to reach it doubles as a gentle acclimatization walk with a big payoff in views.
What to expect
A path zigzags up from the village, gaining a few hundred metres in under an hour for most walkers. At the top, the small shrine clings to the rock, and trekkers who wish to can receive a blessing and a knotted protection thread from the lama — a long-standing local custom, offered respectfully rather than commercially. The terrace gives a fine outlook over Manang, the Gangapurna glacier and the valley beyond.
Good to know
- Etiquette: Dress modestly, walk clockwise around the shrine, and leave a small donation toward the gompa if you receive a blessing.
- Acclimatization: The climb is an easy way to add altitude on the rest day — read our Manang acclimatization guide and the national altitude sickness primer.
- Nearby: Combine it with ancient Braga Monastery and the Milarepa Cave hermitage, part of Nepal's wider tradition of monasteries and gompas.

How do you get to Praken Gompa?+
It is a short but steep walk uphill from Manang village, gaining a few hundred metres in altitude. The climb takes well under an hour for most people and makes a popular gentle outing on the acclimatization rest day, with fine views back over the valley.
Is the Praken Gompa blessing a real tradition?+
Yes. Receiving a blessing from the lama at Praken before crossing the high pass is a long-standing local custom that many trekkers choose to take part in. It is offered respectfully rather than commercially; a modest donation toward the gompa is customary and appreciated.
