A Mustang Itinerary
Plan a Mustang trip — a 3-4 day Lower Mustang loop through Jomsom and Muktinath, or the 10-14 day trek to Lo Manthang.
A Mustang itinerary comes in two scales: a short, freely accessible loop through Lower Mustang, or the longer restricted-area journey north into Upper Mustang to the walled city of Lo Manthang. Which you choose depends on your time, budget and appetite for the high desert.
The short answer
If you have three to four days, do Lower Mustang: fly or drive to Jomsom, see the apple village of Marpha, overnight in medieval Kagbeni, and climb to the sacred temple at Muktinath via Jharkot. If you have 10 to 14 days and the budget for the special permit and a guide, push north into Upper Mustang to Lo Manthang. Both run on the rain-shadow climate, so March to November all work.
Lower Mustang (3-4 days)
- Day 1: Fly Pokhara to Jomsom or drive up the Kali Gandaki; settle in and walk south to the apple village of Marpha.
- Day 2: Head up to Kagbeni, the medieval gateway town; detour to the cliff-set Bon village of Lubra if you have energy.
- Day 3: Climb to the sacred temple at Muktinath, pausing at the fortress village of Jharkot; return toward Jomsom.
- Day 4: Buffer for weather, the Kali Gandaki Gorge scenery, or the flight out.
Upper Mustang (10-14 days)
The restricted north needs more time and planning. Stage from Jomsom through Kagbeni's checkpoint and climb over several days through villages like Chele, Ghami and Tsarang to Lo Manthang, allowing rest days for the cave monasteries at Chhoser. Build in flexibility for flights and weather, and read our Upper Mustang permits and access guide before booking, plus the dedicated Upper Mustang trek and the wider restricted-area treks of Nepal.
A typical Upper Mustang schedule looks like: two days walking or driving in from Jomsom to Tsarang, a day on to Lo Manthang, two days exploring the walled city and the cave monasteries, then three to four days back down a different route through Dhakmar and Ghami. Many travellers now drive one direction and walk the other to save time, or use the jeep road on the rougher western stages. However you stage it, leave a buffer day or two for the Pokhara-Jomsom flight, which is the single most common cause of disrupted plans.
Good to know
- Getting in: Use the Pokhara to Jomsom and Muktinath route as your way in and out.
- Altitude: Both routes climb above 3,500m — build in slow days and don't rush the gain by jeep.
- More ideas: See the region's full set of sights in more things to do in Mustang.
- Budget: Lower Mustang can be done cheaply and independently; Upper Mustang is far pricier once the special permit, guide and agency fees are added, so factor those in early when deciding which route fits your trip.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need for Mustang?+
For Lower Mustang — Jomsom, Marpha, Kagbeni and Muktinath — three to four days is enough by jeep or short walks. A full Upper Mustang trip to Lo Manthang and back runs roughly 10 to 14 days, depending on whether you walk both ways or use jeeps for part of the route.
What is a good Lower Mustang itinerary?+
A classic loop is: fly or drive to Jomsom, visit Marpha, overnight in Kagbeni, head up to Muktinath via Jharkot, then return. Spread over three or four days it covers the apple villages, the medieval gateway town and the sacred temple without rushing the altitude.
Can you do Mustang by jeep instead of trekking?+
Yes. Lower Mustang is increasingly road-accessible, so Jomsom, Marpha, Kagbeni and Muktinath can all be reached by jeep. Even much of Upper Mustang can now be driven, though many travellers still prefer to walk it for the villages and landscapes.
How do you get to Mustang to start?+
Most trips begin with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom or a drive up the Kali Gandaki road via Beni and Tatopani. From Jomsom, the Lower Mustang sights are close by, and the road and trail continue north towards Kagbeni and Upper Mustang.
Should you do Lower or Upper Mustang?+
Lower Mustang suits travellers short on time or budget who want the headline sights without a special permit. Upper Mustang is for those with 10 to 14 days and the budget for the restricted-area permit and a guide, who want the walled city of Lo Manthang and remote villages.
