Mustang Packing and Altitude Guide

What to pack for Mustang and how to handle altitude — layers, sun and dust gear, and how to acclimatise safely.

Pack for cold, wind, intense sun and dust, and treat the altitude with respect even though Mustang is lower than the big Himalayan passes. The route climbs above 3,500m for days — Lo Manthang sits at 3,840m and Upper Mustang's passes reach near 4,000m — so warm layers, sun protection and gradual acclimatisation matter more than heavy mountaineering gear. Here is what to bring and how to stay safe.

The short answer

Bring warm layers and a windproof shell, a down jacket and a four-season sleeping bag, broken-in boots, and full sun and dust protection. Ascend gradually, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and watch for altitude symptoms — especially on a fast jeep tour to Lo Manthang, which gives less time to adjust than a staged walk. For the national basics, see the Nepal packing list.

What to pack

  • Layers: base layers, a fleece or mid-layer, a warm down jacket, and a windproof, water-resistant shell for the relentless valley wind.
  • Sleep and feet: a warm (four-season) sleeping bag for cold lodge nights, and sturdy, broken-in boots with good ankle support.
  • Sun and dust: strong sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, a wide-brim hat and a buff or scarf — the high-altitude sun is fierce and the trails are dusty.
  • Hydration and health: a water filter or purification tablets, a personal first-aid kit, and any altitude or stomach medication you may need.
  • Practicalities: plenty of cash (no reliable ATMs north of Jomsom), a power bank for limited and pricey charging, and a torch or headlamp.

Managing the altitude

Mustang is not extreme altitude, but the heights are enough to cause altitude sickness if you climb too fast. The walking Upper Mustang trek itinerary builds in gradual gain and rest days, which is the safest way up. The risk is higher on a fast drive, since gaining Lo Manthang's 3,840m in a day or two leaves little time to adjust. Wherever you are:

  • Ascend gradually and avoid big single-day altitude jumps where you can.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol, which worsens symptoms.
  • Watch for warning signs — persistent headache, nausea, dizziness and breathlessness — and descend if they get worse.

Timing affects what you pack

The season runs roughly March to November. Spring and autumn are mild by day but cold at night; winter is bitter and many villages empty out; the monsoon months stay dry here in the rain shadow but the afternoon wind is strong year-round. Match your kit to the month using the best time to visit Nepal guide. If you are starting gently, the freely accessible Lower Mustang trek is a good place to test your gear and your acclimatisation before going higher.

For the full planning picture — route, permit, transport, festival and packing together — see the Upper Mustang trekking guide. Pack smart and climb slow, and the high desert is far more comfortable than its reputation suggests.

Frequently asked questions

What should you pack for an Upper Mustang trek?+

Pack for cold, wind, intense sun and dust. Bring warm layers and a windproof shell, a down jacket and warm sleeping bag, sturdy broken-in boots, a buff or scarf against the dust, strong sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses, plus a water filter or purification, a first-aid kit and cash, since there are no reliable ATMs in the north.

How high does the Mustang trek go?+

Lo Manthang sits at about 3,840m, and the Upper Mustang route crosses passes near 4,000m, including Nyi La and Chogo La. Lower Mustang reaches around 3,800m at Muktinath. It is not extreme altitude, but the heights are enough to cause altitude sickness if you ascend too fast, especially by jeep.

Do you need to worry about altitude sickness in Mustang?+

Yes, you should take it seriously. Although Mustang is lower than the big Annapurna or Everest passes, the route still climbs above 3,500m for days, and fast jeep ascents leave little time to adjust. Ascend gradually, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and watch for headaches, nausea and breathlessness.

Is it cold in Mustang?+

It can be very cold, especially at night and in the wind. Days can be sunny and mild, but the high desert drops sharply after dark and a fierce afternoon wind funnels up the Kali Gandaki. Even in the spring and autumn seasons you need a warm down layer and a four-season sleeping bag.
