The Best Time to Trek to Everest Base Camp
Autumn and spring are the prime EBC windows; winter is clear but bitter and the monsoon clouds the peaks.
The best time to trek to Everest Base Camp is autumn (October to November) and spring (late March to May), the two windows when the Khumbu offers stable weather, clear views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, and the most dependable flights to Lukla. Autumn is the most reliable for clear skies; spring is warmer and coincides with the Everest climbing season. This page sits within our Nepal trekking seasons collection and focuses only on the Khumbu — for the route itself, see the Everest region treks.
Autumn: the clearest window
After the monsoon clears in late September, the Khumbu enters its finest spell. October delivers crisp, settled weather, sharp mountain views and dry trails, making it the most popular month on the trail. November stays clear and stable but grows progressively colder at altitude as winter approaches. This is the safest window for the high points — Kala Patthar, Gorak Shep and the linked passes of the Everest Three Passes trek. For the wider picture, see autumn trekking in Nepal.
Spring: warmer days and the climbing season
Spring runs roughly late March to May. Temperatures are milder, days are longer and the lower Khumbu blooms with rhododendron. From mid-April, Everest Base Camp fills with the brightly coloured tents of the climbing expeditions preparing for the pre-monsoon summit push, a unique sight for trekkers. The trade-off is more afternoon haze and a higher chance of fresh snow on the high points than in autumn. Compare the two directly in our spring versus autumn guide.
Winter and monsoon: the hard windows
Winter (December to February) is dry and often dazzlingly clear, with empty trails, but night temperatures at Gorak Shep plunge far below freezing and some high lodges close. It suits only well-equipped, experienced trekkers; for gentler cold-season options see winter trekking in Nepal.
The monsoon (June to August) is the weakest time for the Khumbu: wet trails, frequent cloud hiding the peaks and unreliable Lukla flights. If summer is your only option, the dry rain-shadow treks of the Trans-Himalaya are a far better choice than EBC.
Practical timing notes
- Lukla flights are most reliable in clear autumn and spring; always add buffer days for weather delays.
- Acclimatisation matters in every season — Base Camp sits at around 5,364 m and Kala Patthar at about 5,545 m. Read our altitude sickness in Nepal guide.
- Plan and pack with the Nepal trekking guide, and if you are also weighing the western circuits, see the best time for the Annapurna Circuit.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to trek to Everest Base Camp?+
October is the best single month, with the clearest skies, the most stable weather and reliable Lukla flights after the monsoon. Late April and early May are the best spring alternative, coinciding with the Everest climbing season when Base Camp is full of expedition tents.
Can you trek to Everest Base Camp in winter?+
Yes, in December and into January, but it is bitterly cold, with night temperatures well below freezing at Gorak Shep and many high lodges closed or quiet. The skies are often crystal clear and trails empty, so winter EBC suits well-equipped, experienced trekkers who can handle the cold.
Is the monsoon a good time for Everest Base Camp?+
No, the monsoon (June to August) is the weakest window. Trails are wet, leeches appear lower down, the high peaks are usually hidden by cloud and Lukla flights are frequently delayed or cancelled. If you must trek in summer, choose a rain-shadow region instead.
How reliable are Lukla flights by season?+
Flights to Lukla are most reliable in the clear autumn and spring windows, though weather delays can still happen. They are least reliable in the monsoon, when low cloud closes the airstrip for hours or days. Always build buffer days into a Khumbu itinerary regardless of season.
