Mardi Himal vs Annapurna Base Camp
A quiet ridge or the deep sanctuary — Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp compared by days, altitude and views.
Mardi Himal is the shorter, quieter ridge trek and Annapurna Base Camp is the longer, deeper sanctuary route — both sit in the Annapurna region and start from Pokhara, but they reward you differently. Mardi ends on a lonely high ridge beneath Machhapuchhre; ABC climbs into a glacial amphitheatre encircled by 7,000- and 8,000-metre giants. This page compares them so you can pick the right step up from a first short trek.
The quick verdict
Choose the Mardi Himal trek if you want solitude, a shorter five-to-seven-day trip and a dramatic ridge finish. Choose the Annapurna Base Camp trek if the bucket-list sanctuary, with mountains on every side, is worth seven to ten days and bigger crowds. If you are coming straight from Poon Hill, the Poon Hill versus Mardi Himal page is the natural first read.
Difficulty and altitude
The two are close in difficulty. Mardi Himal is shorter but tops out higher, at a 4,500 m base-camp viewpoint, with steep, exposed upper sections. ABC runs longer and reaches 4,130 m at the sanctuary, with more sustained daily walking. Both are moderate treks for fit beginners, and on both you should pace yourself and read about altitude sickness in Nepal.
Scenery and crowds
Mardi Himal is the quiet one: a forested then alpine ridge with Machhapuchhre filling the sky and few other trekkers. ABC is busier, especially in peak season, but its payoff is unmatched — standing on the sanctuary floor at 4,130 m, ringed by Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South and the Fishtail. The lower ABC trail also passes the hot springs at Jhinu Danda.
Cost and logistics
Both are staged from Pokhara and use the same ACAP permit plus a TIMS card. ABC costs more simply because it is longer, while Mardi has fewer lodges up high, so reserve ahead in October–November and March–April.
Combine or sequence them
Many trekkers link both with Poon Hill into a longer Annapurna loop, or do Mardi first as a shorter trip and return for ABC later. Either way, both make excellent second treks after an easy first outing.
