Langtang Valley vs Annapurna Base Camp

Two great week-long first treks compared — Tamang Langtang near Kathmandu versus the Annapurna Sanctuary from Pokhara.

Langtang Valley and Annapurna Base Camp are the two best week-long first big treks in Nepal, and the choice mostly comes down to location and character. Langtang is the quieter, culture-rich valley closest to Kathmandu, while ABC is the busier, bucket-list sanctuary from Pokhara. Both are moderate, both run about a week, and both suit a fit beginner ready to step up from a short trek. This page compares them directly.

The quick verdict

Choose the Langtang Valley trek if you want fewer crowds, strong Tamang Buddhist culture and the easiest access from Kathmandu. Choose the Annapurna Base Camp trek if the 360-degree sanctuary amphitheatre is the image you have been chasing. If Everest is also on your mind, see Langtang versus Everest Base Camp.

Altitude and difficulty

The two are close. Langtang tops out around 3,870 m at Kyanjin Gompa, with an optional climb up Kyanjin Ri for higher views. ABC reaches 4,130 m at the sanctuary floor. Both are moderate, with seven or so days of walking; ABC is marginally longer and higher. On either, pace yourself and read about altitude sickness in Nepal.

Access and crowds

Langtang wins on access: one road journey from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, no flight, and a quieter trail that has rebuilt thoughtfully since the 2015 earthquake. ABC is reached from Pokhara and shares its lower trail with the Poon Hill route, so it is busier, especially in peak season.

Scenery and culture

Langtang is a glaciated valley threaded with Tamang villages, cheese factories and gompas, ending at Kyanjin Gompa beneath Langtang Lirung. ABC pushes through bamboo and rhododendron into a high glacial bowl ringed by Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre, with hot springs at Jhinu Danda on the way down.

How to choose

If you are based in Kathmandu and short on time, Langtang is the efficient pick — see the full Langtang Valley trek itinerary. If you are already heading to Pokhara, ABC is the natural choice, and the Mardi Himal versus Annapurna Base Camp page helps you weigh it against a shorter Annapurna option.
