Spring Trekking in Nepal
March to May brings warm days, long light and rhododendron blooms — Nepal's second great trekking season.
Spring — March to May — is Nepal's second great trekking season, and for many trekkers the most beautiful. Warm days, longer daylight and milder nights make the trails comfortable, while the rhododendron forests burst into red, pink and white, the standout reason to walk in spring. The trade-off is pre-monsoon haze that softens midday views, especially from April. This page belongs to our Nepal trekking seasons collection.
Why trek in spring
Spring offers a gentler kind of trekking than crisp autumn. Days are warm, daylight is long enough for big stages, and high camps are less brutally cold at night, which makes high crossings and base camps more comfortable. Mornings are typically clear with good mountain views before the haze builds. It is an excellent window for the major routes — see how it fits the Annapurna Circuit and Everest Base Camp, where spring coincides with the Everest climbing season.
The rhododendron bloom
Nepal's national flower, the rhododendron, paints the spring hillsides. Blooms start at lower elevations in late March and rise up the slopes into May, so you can chase the colour by altitude. The forests on the Ghorepani Poon Hill trail and the lower Annapurna and Langtang routes are among the most celebrated for spring colour, a major draw that autumn cannot match.
Month by month
- March: cool, clear and quieter; lower rhododendrons begin to bloom, high passes may still hold winter snow.
- April: the prime spring month — warm, blooming and busy, with clear mornings and building afternoon haze.
- May: hot on lower trails and increasingly hazy; high treks still good in early May, but the weather grows less settled toward the monsoon.
The haze trade-off
The main downside of spring is visibility. As the dry pre-monsoon period progresses, dust and haze accumulate in the air and can soften midday and afternoon mountain views. Start early to catch the clearest light, and read our spring versus autumn comparison to decide whether warmth and blooms outweigh autumn's sharper, more reliable panoramas.
Planning your spring trek
Spring is warm but the high points are still demanding — read our altitude sickness in Nepal guide and plan kit, permits and pacing with the Nepal trekking guide. For the four-season overview see the best time to trek in Nepal, and for the other prime window read about autumn trekking in Nepal.
Frequently asked questions
When is spring trekking season in Nepal?+
Spring runs roughly from March to May. March and April are the prime months, with warm days, clear mornings and rhododendron blooms. By May the lower trails grow hot and afternoon clouds build as the pre-monsoon period approaches, though high treks still work well in early May.
When do rhododendrons bloom on Nepal's trekking trails?+
Rhododendrons bloom from late March at lower elevations into May higher up, turning hillsides red, pink and white. The forests on the Ghorepani Poon Hill trail and the lower Annapurna and Langtang routes are especially famous for their spring colour.
Are mountain views good in spring?+
Spring mornings are usually clear with good mountain views, but pre-monsoon haze and dust build through the day and can soften midday and afternoon panoramas, particularly from April onward. For the sharpest views all day, autumn is more reliable.
Is spring warmer than autumn for trekking?+
Yes, spring is generally warmer, with milder nights at high camps and longer daylight hours, which makes long stages and high crossings more comfortable. This warmth is one of the main reasons many trekkers prefer spring despite the increasing afternoon haze.
